Motherhood and Early Interaction in a Schizoaffective Patient: The Story of a Long-Term Psychotherapy
2010
This paper focused on motherhood in a patient with a schizoaffective disorder. The core of the treatment was to build a strong therapeutic alliance in which compliance with medication and elaboration of mental processes could be achieved. Pregnancy and motherhood are a time of crisis in the life of women. For the schizoaffective patient this crisis threatens the deepest level of functioning and challenges attachment patterns. Comprehensive treatment including psychosocial support, medication and psychotherapy is able to protect the baby to be, the early relationship between mother and baby, and the development of the child over time in this high-risk family. However, the commitment over yea…
New tools for detecting latent tuberculosis infection: evaluation of RD1-specific long-term response
2009
Abstract Background Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assays (IGRAs) were designed to detect latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). However, discrepancies were found between the tuberculin skin test (TST) and IGRAs results that cannot be attributed to prior Bacille Calmètte Guerin vaccinations. The aim of this study was to evaluate tools for improving LTBI diagnosis by analyzing the IFN-γ response to RD1 proteins in prolonged (long-term response) whole blood tests in those subjects resulting negative to assays such as QuantiFERON-TB Gold In tube (QFT-IT). Methods The study population included 106 healthy TST+ individuals with suspected LTBI (recent contact of smear-positive TB and homeless) c…
Vocational training integrated into inpatient psychosomatic rehabilitation--short and long-term results from a controlled study.
2005
Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of a vocational training programme on short- and long-term results after psychosomatic rehabilitation. Method. 1,590 inpatients were screened for vocational integration. A high-risk group of 266 patients was randomly assigned to the vocational training programme plus psychosomatic treatment; treatment- as- usual served as a control condition. An occupational training was conducted at local companies, closely integrated into psychosomatic treatment. Vocational attitudes and adjustment were studied at intake, discharge, three, 12 and 24 month follow-ups. Results. More than half of the study participants were unemployment and/or long-t…
Subtotal esophageal resection in motility disorders of the esophagus.
2005
Background: Esophagectomy for motility disorders is performed infrequently. It is indicated after failed medical therapy, pneumatic dilation, non-resecting surgical and redo procedures. Patient selection in this group is challenging and the operative risk has to be weighted carefully against the poor quality of life with persistent or recurrent dysphagia. Patients and Methods: Between September 1985 and April 2004, subtotal esophageal resections for advanced esophageal motility disorders of the esophagus not responding to previous therapy were carried out in 8 patients (6 females, 2 males). The median age of these patients was 59.5 (43–78) years. Six pa…
Primary HBB gene mutation severity and long-term outcomes in a global cohort of β-thalassaemia
2021
In β-thalassaemia, the severity of inherited β-globin gene mutations determines the severity of the clinical phenotype at presentation and subsequent transfusion requirements. However, data on associated long-term outcomes remain limited. We analysed data from 2109 β-thalassaemia patients with available genotypes in a global database. Genotype severity was grouped as β0 /β0 , β0 /β+ , β+ /β+ , β0 /β++ , β+ /β++ , and β++ /β++ . Patients were followed from birth until death or loss to follow-up. The median follow-up time was 34·1 years. Mortality and multiple morbidity outcomes were analyzed through five different stratification models of genotype severity groups. Interestingly, β0 and β+ mu…
Long-term treatment of acromegaly with the somatostatin analogue SMS 201-995 over 6 months.
1986
This study examined the effects of the long-acting selective mini somatostatin analogue (SMS) 201-995 in two acromegalic patients who were treated for 3 and 6 months, respectively. During treatment the mean growth hormone levels (25.3 and 20.8 ng/ml vs 5.9 and 10.6 ng/ml) and somatomedin C levels (6.2 and 6.2 IU/ml vs 3.3 and 3.8 IU/ml) decreased and the patients reported an improvement in their symptoms. The main side effect was an increase in stool fat excretion which did exceed the normal range (less than 7 g/day) in one patient. Five acromegalics who received 2 X 50 micrograms SMS 201-995/day for 5 days showed a significant increase of stool fat excretion (1.7 vs 3.5 g/day; p less than …
L'utilisation de la musique comme support de nouveaux apprentissages dans le vieillisement normal et la maladie d'Alzheimer
2012
This thesis research aims to test the potential of music as a mnemonic support for new learning in normal elderly and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) participants. Several studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of music on cognition in aging and dementia. At the same time, in young adults, the idea that music could serve as a mnemonic support is highly debated. Yet, very few studies addressed this question in aging or dementia. In the present work, we conduct two studies in a cohort of 8 mild Alzheimer’s disease and 7 matched control participants. The first study concerns verbal memory, and compares learning and different retention delays of lyrics (unknown texts) that are either spoken o…
Exploring the validity of the long term data record V4 database for land surface monitoring
2015
The last (and final) version of the Long Term Data Record (LTDR) — Version 4 — has been released recently by NASA. This database includes daily information for all AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) channels, as well as ancillary data, since July 1981 up to present. This database is the longest available record of remotely sensed data useful for land surface monitoring, since it allows the estimation of vegetation indices at daily resolution, as well as the daily estimation of land surface temperature (LST). Here, we analyze the fitness of this database for land surface monitoring. To that end, we first estimated NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), LST, as well as e…
