Physical Activity of Children With and Without Long-Term Illness or Disability
2011
Background:We know very little about physical activity in children with long-term illness or disability compared with those children without disabilities. Previous studies indicate low physical activity levels among all adolescents. Methods:The sample consisted of Canadian (n = 2720) and Finnish pupils (n = 3459) approximately 13.5 and 15.5 years of age in general (mainstreamed) education. The study is a part of the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Nationally representative data were collected in 2002 using a standardized questionnaire. The moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity screening measure was used. Results:Approximately one-fifth of the pupils in both co…

Long-Term Ventilation in Neuromuscular Patients: Review of Concerns, Beliefs, and Ethical Dilemmas
2019
Background: Noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) is an effective treatment in patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD) to improve symptoms, quality of life, and survival. Summary: NIV should be used early in the course of respiratory muscle involvement in NMD patients and its requirements may increase over time. Therefore, training on technical equipment at home and advice on problem solving are warranted. Remote monitoring of ventilator parameters using built-in ventilator software is recommended. Telemedicine may be helpful in reducing hospital admissions. Anticipatory planning and palliative care should be …

Role of NGOs in the implementation of active labour market policies
2012
PurposeThis is a mixed method comparative case study. The aim of this paper is to find the role played by non‐governmental organizations (NGOs) in the implementation of the active labour market policies (ALMPs) of Finland and Sweden, and also the relationship that the NGOs have with the government of the two countries.Design/methodology/approachTwo NGOs were selected in Finland and one NGO was selected in Sweden for the data collection. The two selected NGOs in Finland were Jyväskylän Katulähetys in the City of Jyväskylä and Pirkanmaan Sininauha in the City of Tampere. Meanwhile, the one selected NGO in Sweden was Stockholms Stadsmission in the City of Stockholm. Primary data were collected…
Energy saving in airports by trigeneration. Part II: Short and long term planning for the Malpensa 2000 CHCP plant
2006
With reference to the feasibility analysis for CHCP applications in airports performed in Part I of this work, the optimal strategy for repowering and operation of the Malpensa 2000 CHCP plant is here discussed. The analysis starts from experimental energy demand data, available on hourly basis for an entire operational year. After a description of the CHCP lay-out, the optimal management strategy was determined keeping into account the articulated energy tariff system and the technical characteristics of components. A profit-oriented optimization of the repowering actions to take up to 2010 is presented, based on the expected growth of energy consumption due to the scheduled increases in t…
Protection of HeLa‐T4 + cells against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection after stable transfection with HIV LTR‐2‘,5‘‐oligoadenylate synthe…
1990
An expression vector (pU3R-III/2-5AS) of human 2',5'-oligoadenylate (2-5A) synthetase was constructed in which a cDNA encoding an active form of the enzyme was located 3' to a 3'-long terminal repeat (LTR) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The LTR-directed expression of this hybrid DNA could be activated in trans by the HIV tat gene product. This vector was used for transfection of HeLa-T4+ cells, which are permissive to HIV infection, as well as of normal HeLa cells. HIV replication after infection of the CD4-receptor-bearing HeLa-T4+ cells with HIV-1 was found to be strongly reduced when drug-selected cells cotransfected with pU3R-III/2-5AS and a hygromycin B resistance gene…
