Connecting the data landscape of long-term ecological studies: the SPI-Birds data hub

The integration and synthesis of the data in different areas of science is drastically slowed and hindered by a lack of standards and networking programmes. Long-term studies of individually marked animals are not an exception. These studies are especially important as instrumental for understanding evolutionary and eco-logical processes in the wild. Furthermore, their number and global distribution provides a unique opportunity to assess the generality of patterns and to address broad-scale global issues (e.g. climate change).

Serum Response Factor-Mediated Gene Regulation in a Drosophila Visual Working Memory

Summary Background Navigation through the environment requires a working memory for the chosen target and path integration facilitating an approach when the target becomes temporarily hidden. We have previously shown that this visual orientation memory resides in the ellipsoid body, which is part of the central complex in the Drosophila brain. Former analysis of  foraging and ignorant mutants have revealed that a hierarchical PKG and RSKII kinase signaling cascade in a subset of the ellipsoid-body ring neurons is required for this type of working memory in flies. Following the restoration of natural conditions by reducing human pressures, reforestation is currently considered a possible option to accelerate the recovery of seagrass habitats. Long-term monitoring programs theoretically represent an ideal solution to assess whether a reforestation plan has produced the desired results. Here, we report on the performance of a 20 m2 patch of Posidonia oceanica transplanted on dead matte twelve years after transplantation in the Gulf of Palermo, northwestern Sicily. Compelling evidence indicates that Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) may possibly share a common pathological origin, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. T2D is a known risk factor for AD and insulin resistance (hallmark of T2D) has been extensively documented in AD patients. Notably, insulin is important for learning and memory due to its role in LTP and LTD modulation. The focus of legislators, authorities and academics on the temporal dimension of sus-tainable actions has led to the progressive re-emerge of the contrast between long-termism and short-termism, that is frequent indeed in corporate law. The orientation to long-term decisions and attempts to stem the short-term ones have been a main point of recent legislative measures on this topic. This paper aims to critically re-evaluate the above contrast, highlighting some of the most relevant areas that most need regulatory interventions and suggesting abandon-ing the frequent short-term disfavor.

Naming speed and Effortful and Automatic Inhibition in Children with Arithmetic Learning Disabilities

Abstract We report a two-year longitudinal study aimed at investigating the rate of access to numerical and non-numerical information in long-term memory and the functioning of automatic and effortful cognitive inhibition processes in children with arithmetical learning disabilities (ALDs). Twelve children with ALDs, of age 9.3 years, and twelve gender–age-matched controls were involved in the study. Rate of access was measured through digit- and letter-naming tasks, automatic cognitive inhibition was measured using a negative priming paradigm, and effortful cognitive inhibition was measured rating intrusion errors in a working memory task.
