Lower-Limb Pain, Disease, and Injury Burden as Determinants of Muscle Strength Deficit After Hip Fracture
2009
Background: Hip fracture may result in an asymmetrical lower-limb strength deficit. The deficit may be related to the trauma, surgical treatment, pain, or disuse of the fractured limb. However, disease and injury burden or musculoskeletal pain in the other limb may reduce muscle strength on that side, reducing the asymmetrical deficit. The aim of our study was to explore the asymmetrical strength deficit and to determine the potential underlying factors in patients from six months to seven years after a hip fracture. Methods: The asymmetrical deficit was calculated ([fractured limb/sum of both lower limbs] x 100%) for isometric knee extension torque, rate of force development during isometr…
Effects of 12-month home-based physiotherapy on duration of living at home and functional capacity among older persons with signs of frailty or with …
2018
Health concerns, such as frailty and osteoporotic fractures decrease functional capacity and increase use of health and social care services in the aging population. The ability to continue living at home is dependent on functional capacity, which can be enhanced by rehabilitation. We study the effects of a 12-month home-based physiotherapy program with 12-month follow-up on duration of living at home, functional capacity, and the use of social and health care services among older persons with signs of frailty, or with a recently operated hip fracture. This is a non-blinded, parallel group, randomized controlled trial performed in South Karelia Social and Health Care District, Finland (popu…
Patients' narratives of patient education in physiotherapy after total hip arthroplasty.
2019
Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to explore patients' narratives of patient education in physiotherapy after a total hip arthroplasty (THA). Method The data was collected via open thematic interviews from ten patients who had had a primary THA. The interviews were analysed using a qualitative, narrative method. Results Three story models of patient education in physiotherapy were identified: Supportive patient education in physiotherapy, Co-operative patient education in physiotherapy and Contradictory patient education in physiotherapy. The emphasis of narration in the first story model was on the trust in the guidance, functioning interaction in the second and insufficient pat…

Ikääntyvien lonkkamurtumapotilaiden toimijuus ja elämäntilanteet
2011
Sagittal Plane Hip, Knee, and Ankle Biomechanics and the Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Prospective Study
2018
Background: Stiff landings with less knee flexion and high vertical ground-reaction forces have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The literature on the association between other sagittal plane measures and the risk of ACL injuries with a prospective study design is lacking. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between selected sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle biomechanics and the risk of ACL injury in young female team-sport athletes. Study Design: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 171 female basketball and floorball athletes (age range, 12-21 years) participated in a vertical drop jump test usin…
Physical disability in community-dwelling older people after hip fracture : randomized controlled trials with physical rehabilitation

Physical activity after a hip fracture : effect of a multicomponent home-based rehabilitation program - a secondary analysis of a randomized controll…
2017
Objectives To investigate the effect of a yearlong multicomponent rehabilitation program on the level of physical activity (PA) and the maintenance of the level of PA over 1-year follow-up among older people recovering from a recent hip fracture. Design Secondary analysis of a randomized, controlled, parallel-group trial. Setting Home-based rehabilitation; measurements in university laboratory. Participants Community-dwelling people (N=81) aged ≥60 years recovering from a hip fracture. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention (n=40) or a control (n=41) group, on average, 42±23 days after discharge from the hospital. Intervention A yearlong intervention included evaluation and …

Tehostetun ja yksilöllisen avokuntoutusohjelman vaikutus lonkkamurtumasta toipuvien iäkkäiden kaatumisen pelkoon
2013
Kaatumiset ovat ikääntyneiden yleisin tapaturmatyyppi. Kaatumisten määrä lisääntyy iän kasvaessa ja toimintakyvyn heikentyessä. Kaatumisten yksi vakavimpia seurauksia on lonkkamurtuma, joka vaikuttaa ikääntyneen elämään heikentäen toimintakykyä ja elämänlaatua. Lonkkamurtuman hoito aiheuttaa myös yhteiskunnalle vuosittain merkittäviä kustannuksia. Lonkkamurtumapotilaat kärsivät tapaturmaisen kaatumisen vuoksi kaatumisen pelosta.
