Adaptation to low oxygen conditions is essential for maintaining homeostasis and viability in oxygen-consuming multi-cellular tissues, including solid tumors. Central in these processes are the hypoxia-inducible transcription factors, HIF-1 and HIF-2, controlling genes involved in e.g. glucose metabolism and neovascularization. Tumor hypoxia and HIF expression have also been associated with a dedifferentiated phenotype and increased aggressiveness. Genetic analyses aiming at assessing the presence of specific sequences or alleles are often carried out by PCR. Sexing of most birds is nowadays based on PCR with “universal” primers and relies on the assessment of the presence of the sex-linked CHD1-Z and -W alleles. Forensic mtDNA hair analysis excludes a dog from having caused a traffic accident

A dog was suspected of having caused a traffic accident. Three hair fragments were recovered from the damaged car and subjected to DNA sequence analysis of the canine mitochondrial D-loop control region. The results were compared to saliva and hair samples from the alleged dog, as well as to control hair samples from four unrelated dogs of different breeds. Two sequence types exhibiting five nucleotide differences in a 377 bp fragment were identified among the four controls. Whereas the evidence hair fragment was identical to the type 1 control sequence, the alleged dog shared the type 2 control sequence except for one position. Abstract Retroviral vectors are currently the most suitable vehicles for therapeutic gene transfer in hematopoietic stem cells. However, these vectors are known to integrate rather randomly throughout the genome, suffering the so called chromosomal position effects (PE). Spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma

We develop a method to obtain fermion spectral functions non-perturbatively in a non-Abelian gauge theory with high occupation numbers of gauge fields. After recovering the free field case, we extract the spectral function of fermions in a highly occupied non-Abelian plasma close to its non-thermal fixed point, i.e., in a self-similar regime of the non-equilibrium dynamics. We find good agreement with hard loop perturbation theory for medium-induced masses, dispersion relations and quasiparticle residues. We also extract the full momentum dependence of the damping rate of the collective excitations.

The classification of the myriad of small-scale structures that are used in tectonic analysis is presently based on their geometry, which makes it difficult to discover transitions and groups amongst them. An alternative would be to classify structures according to the flow type by which they form, but this is difficult. Although most structures form by heterogeneous flow, modelling studies are often focussed on bulk homogeneous flow, since the mathematical treatment of heterogeneous flow is cumbersome. The Cygnus Loop is interacting with a protrusion of the cavity wall in its eastern edge (the XA region), where the X-ray emission is very bright. The complexity of the environment and the non-linear physical processes of the shock-cloud interaction make the origin of the X-ray emission still not well understood. Evidence of nonthermal particles in coronal loops heated impulsively by nanoflares

The physical processes causing energy exchange between the Sun's hot corona and its cool lower atmosphere remain poorly understood. The chromosphere and transition region (TR) form an interface region between the surface and the corona that is highly sensitive to the coronal heating mechanism. High resolution observations with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) reveal rapid variability (about 20 to 60 seconds) of intensity and velocity on small spatial scales at the footpoints of hot dynamic coronal loops.
