Design approach for high efficiency NFC systems with magnetic shielding materials

2020

The performance of a Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna may be diminished when it is placed close to any conductive surface such as a metallic case or a battery. This degradation is caused due to the stray magnetic field created by the eddy currents induced on the surface, which is opposite to the intended field generated by the NFC antenna. One of the first solutions that come to mind to designers when facing this problem is the use of high permeability magnetic shielding based on sintered ferrite sheets. This is a good approach but something that is not generally taken into account is that these materials introduce an additional inductance to the NFC antenna. If the permeability of th…

Safety analysis of the DONES primary heat removal system

2020

Abstract The development of a neutron source able to reproduce the irradiation conditions typical of a nuclear fusion reactor, in order to test candidate structural materials, is the main goal of the Work Package Early Neutron Source (WPENS) of the EUROfusion action. This source, named Demo Oriented NEutron Source (DONES), is a facility where neutrons are produced by means of D-Li interactions. More in detail, a beam of 125 mA deuterium ions at the energy of 40 MeV strikes a lithium jet flowing in a purposely shaped channel in order to obtain an intense and stable neutron flux for the irradiation of material samples. In the framework of these activities, safety analyses are a key aspect in …

The inclination effect on the performance of water-filled heat pipes

1991

Abstract Heat pipes have been used in wide ranges of applications today including solar engineering. During this research study, the inclination dependent performance of water filled heat pipes was investigated both theoretically and experimentally for solar energy applications. The results showed that the performance of water-filled heat pipes are strongly dependent on the inclination and the heat source temperatures. As a general result, the heat transfer capability of water filled heat pipes is reduced dramatically below a 45° tilt angle.

Fokker–Planck equation with respect to heat measures on loop groups

2011

Abstract The Dirichlet form on the loop group L e ( G ) with respect to the heat measure defines a Laplacian Δ DM on L e ( G ) . In this note, we will use Wasserstein distance variational method to solve the associated heat equation for a given data of finite entropy.

Feuilletages deCP(n) : de l’holonomie hyperbolique pour les minimaux exceptionnels

1992

Let ℱ be a holomorphic foliation ofCP(n). If ℱ has a leaf L, the closure L of which is disjoint from the singular set of the foliation, we prove that there exists a loop in a leaf contained in L with contracting hyperbolic holonomy.

The soluble loop BC region guides, but not dictates, the assembly of the transmembrane cytochrome b6

2017

Studying folding and assembly of naturally occurring α-helical transmembrane proteins can inspire the design of membrane proteins with defined functions. Thus far, most studies have focused on the role of membrane-integrated protein regions. However, to fully understand folding pathways and stabilization of α–helical membrane proteins, it is vital to also include the role of soluble loops. We have analyzed the impact of interhelical loops on folding, assembly and stability of the heme-containing four-helix bundle transmembrane protein cytochrome b6 that is involved in charge transfer across biomembranes. Cytochrome b6 consists of two transmembrane helical hairpins that sandwich two heme mol…

Evaluation of the Amplex eazyplex Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Assay for Rapid Diagnosis of Pneumocystis jirovecii Pneumonia

2020

ABSTRACT Quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays are the gold standard for diagnosis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP). However, they are laborious and require skilled personnel. Therefore, execution outside regular working hours of the molecular biology laboratory is limited. The eazyplex P. jirovecii assay (PJA) uses loop-mediated isothermal amplification for detection of P. jirovecii. It is performed directly with respiratory specimens, without the need for special skills, and delivers a result within 3 to 25 min. The goal of our study was to compare the performance of the eazyplex PJA with that of established P. jirovecii qPCR assays. All archived bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samp…

Mitochondrial DNA in the central european population

2000

Sequencing of mtDNA is an advanced method for the individualisation of traces. Disadvantages of this method are expensive and time-consuming analysis and evaluation procedures as well as the necessary stock of population-genetic data which is still insufficient. Central European institutes of forensic medicine from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland have been working together since the beginning of 1998 to establish a mtDNA database. The aim is to build up a large stock of forensically established data and provide population-genetic data for frequency investigations, which will serve as a basis for expert opinions and scientific research. Good data quality is ensured by using original sequen…

Neural Multimodal Belief Tracker with Adaptive Attention for Dialogue Systems

2019

Multimodal dialogue systems are attracting increasing attention with a more natural and informative way for human-computer interaction. As one of its core components, the belief tracker estimates the user's goal at each step of the dialogue and provides a direct way to validate the ability of dialogue understanding. However, existing studies on belief trackers are largely limited to textual modality, which cannot be easily extended to capture the rich semantics in multimodal systems such as those with product images. For example, in fashion domain, the visual appearance of clothes play a crucial role in understanding the user's intention. In this case, the existing belief trackers may fail …

Trimeric HIV Env provides epitope occlusion mediated by hypervariable loops

2014

AbstractHypervariable loops of HIV-1 Env protein gp120 are speculated to play roles in the conformational transition of Env to the receptor binding-induced metastable state. Structural analysis of full-length Env-based immunogens, containing the entire V2 loop, displayed tighter association between gp120 subunits, resulting in a smaller trimeric diameter than constructs lacking V2. A prominent basal quaternary location of V2 and V3′ that challenges previous reports would facilitate gp41-independent gp120-gp120 interactions and suggests a quaternary mechanism of epitope occlusion facilitated by hypervariable loops. Deletion of V2 resulted in dramatic exposure of basal, membrane-proximal gp41…
