Role of causality in the evaluation of coherence and transfer function between heart period and systolic pressure in humans

2004

To elicit the effects of considering causality in the study of the interactions between RR interval and systolic pressure (SP) variability, the traditional noncausal cross-spectral analysis was compared with a causal method able to separate the two arms of the RR-SP regulatory loop. Estimates of coherence (K) and causal coherences from SP to RR (Ksr) and from RR to SP (Krs), and of noncausal (G) and causal (Gsr) baroreflex gain were evaluated at 0.1 Hz in 10 healthy young subjects in the supine position and after head-up tilt. While K was high in both conditions, at rest Ksr was significantly lower than Krs. After tilt, Ksr increased and Krs decreased significantly. With respect to G, Gsr w…

Spectral decomposition of RR-variability obtained by an open loop parametric model for the diagnosis of neuromediate syncope

2002

The role of the cardiovascular regulatory mechanism in patients with neuromediate syncope (NS) is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to accomplish continuous non-invasive analysis of the baroreflex mechanism in patients during a head-tip tilt-table test (HTT) using an open-loop autoregressive model with exogenous input. The model describes the causal dependence of the RR interval on the systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability. Thus, RR variability results as the linear composition of SAP-dependent (Pdep) and SAP-independent parts of the RR power (P). Further, the model allows the estimation of the baroreflex gain using the modulus of the transfer function (G) from SAP to RR i…

The advanced Virgo longitudinal control system for the O2 observing run

2020

Following a successful period of data-taking between 2006 and 2011, the Virgo gravitational-wave detector was taken offline for a major upgrade. The changes made to the instrument significantly increased the complexity of the control systems and meant that an extended period of commissioning was required to reach a sensitivity appropriate for science data-taking. This commissioning period was completed in July of 2017 and the second-generation Advanced Virgo detector went on to join the Advanced LIGO detectors in the O2 science run in August of the same year. The upgraded detector was approximately twice as sensitive to binary neutron star mergers as the first-generation instrument. During …

Thermal noise limit for ultra-high vacuum noncontact atomic force microscopy

2013

The noise of the frequency-shift signal Δf in noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) consists of cantilever thermal noise, tip–surface-interaction noise and instrumental noise from the detection and signal processing systems. We investigate how the displacement-noise spectral density dz at the input of the frequency demodulator propagates to the frequency-shift-noise spectral density dΔf at the demodulator output in dependence of cantilever properties and settings of the signal processing electronics in the limit of a negligible tip–surface interaction and a measurement under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions. For a quantification of the noise figures, we calibrate the cantilever displacemen…

Non-linear analysis of a modified QPSK Costas loop

2019

A Costas loop is one of the classical phase-locked loop based circuits, which demodulates data and recovers carrier from the input signal. The Costas loop is essentially a nonlinear control system and its nonlinear analysis is a challenging task. In this article for a modified QPSK Costas loop we analyze the hold-in, pull-in and lock-in ranges. New procedure for estimation of the lock-in range is considered and compared with previously known approach. peerReviewed

Organisational learning in a fusion school

2016

Laiho-Murdoch, Heli. 2016. Organisational learning in a Fusion School University of Jyväskylä. Department of Education. This empirical research examines organisational learning in a fusion-school development during the period of 2010 and 2012 by a case study approach of the phenomenon. This educational fusion is between two diverse countries; Finland and the United Arab Emirates. The background is Abu Dhabi’s education reform since 2003 and the Finnish outstanding educational experience and excellent PISA results. The originality value of this research is unique. This partnership is first of its kind in Finland, and has therefore notable interest value. Organisational learning manifesting i…

Open-source QCD analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions at NLO and NNLO

2019

We present new sets of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). Our analyses are based on deeply inelastic scattering data with charged-lepton and neutrino beams on nuclear targets. In addition, a set of proton baseline PDFs is fitted within the same framework with the same theoretical assumptions. The results of this global QCD analysis are compared to existing nPDF sets and to the fitted cross sections. Also, the uncertainties resulting from the limited constraining power of the included experimental data are presented. The published work is based on an open-source tool, xFitter, which has been modified to be ap…

Asymmetric hysteresis for probing Dzyalohsinskii-Moriya interaction

2016

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is intimately related to the prospect of superior domain-wall dynamics and the formation of magnetic skyrmions. Although some experimental efforts have been recently proposed to quantify these interactions and the underlying physics, it is still far from trivial to address the interfacial DMI. Inspired by the reported tilt of the magnetization of the side edge of a thin film structure, we here present a quasi-static, straightforward measurement tool. By using laterally asymmetric triangular-shaped microstructures, it is demonstrated that interfacial DMI combined with an in-plane magnetic field yields a unique and significant shift in m…

A software receiver adaptive phase lock loop method

2009

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new and relatively simple algorithm which is capable to tune the parameters of the loop filter in a phase lock loop, like the one that can be found in a global navigation satellite system receiver. The parameters are chosen while the system is running, in order to make the bandwidth of the filter adaptive with respect to the signal dynamic and strength. A wider bandwidth is obtained to make the filter more reactive when searching the carrier, while the bandwidth gets narrower when the system is in the tracking state, in order to cut off as much noise as possible. The algorithm is based on the observation of the estimated variance of the phase lock loo…
