Background and purpose: Previous studies on the association between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and body mass index (BMI) have reported conflicting results. We investigated the relationship between PD and BMI by a case–control study. Methods: PD patients were randomly matched to healthy individuals by sex and age. BMI distribution in cases has been compared with BMI of controls and odd ratios (ORs) with 95% CI were calculated. Results: We included 318 PD patients and 318 controls. Abstract In a previous study13 we reported promising results for a new test to differentiate in vivo unilateral otolith functions. That study pointed to a need for further validation on known pathological cases. In this presentation we will detail the results gathered on a group of clinically verified vestibular defectives (verum) and a normal (control) group. The subjects in the verum group were former patients of the ENT clinic of the university hospital. Robotic Versus Laparoscopic Gastric Resection for Primary Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors5 cm: A Size-Matched and Location-Matched Comparison.

This study compared robotic (RR) and laparoscopic resection (LR) for primary gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of the stomach >5 cm. Twelve consecutive patients who underwent RR from 2012 to 2015 were matched for tumor size and location with 24 patients who underwent LR from 2000 to 2012. The median tumor size was 7.1 cm (range, 5.5 to 11.5). GISTs were resected by wedge resection (91.7%) or distal gastrectomy. The median RR operative time was longer than that of LR (162.5 vs. 130 min, respectively; P=0.004). Only 1 LR patient required conversion. The effects of changing body size, energy intake and substrate oxidation on serum T4, FT4, T3, FT3 and TSH were investigated in ten morbidly obese subjects (4 men/6 women; age: 37 ± 6 years; BMI: 53.8 ± 6.5 kg/m2; mean ± SD) who had undergone a surgical bilio-pancreatic by-pass in order to reduce their body weight. The starting value of serum FT3 was inversely related to the BMI (r = -0.63; p < 0.05). After 1-3 months, all the subjects were losing weight and their intake of carbohydrates was almost negligible; at this time a significant reduction of T3 (-14.6%, p < 0.0001), T4 (-19.5%, p < 0.0001), and FT3 (-10.5%, p < 0.001) was observed. Abstract Introduction The acoustic neuroma is a benign tumour that originates in the vestibular branch of the eighth cranial nerve. The main treatment is surgery, but many authors suggest that with elderly patients or in small neuromas we can opt for watchful waiting. Methods This was a retrospective study from 2007 to 2013 that included 27 patients diagnosed of acoustic neuroma that had not been treated due to the size of the tumour, age and comorbidities, or by patient choice. ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To study quantitative changes in endothelial cell count after implantation of the toric iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens. METHODS: A prospective, non-randomized, self-controlled clinical trial was conducted of 40 eyes (28 myopic, 12 hyperopic) of 23 patients with high ametropia and astigmatism. Non-contact computer-assisted endothelial microscopy was performed before and I1 2, and 3 years after surgery. RESULTS: In the myopic group, mean preoperative endothelial cell count was 3179±531 cells/mm p 2 (range: 1800 to 3900 cells/mm2).
