Focus on reading activities : teachers' perspectives

Lukutaito on yksi suomalaisen opetusjärjestelmän tärkeimpiä tavoitteita. Vieraskielisten tekstien lukutaidon merkitys korostuu lukiossa, jossa oppilaiden lukutaitoa arvioidaan jatkuvasti kielitaidon erillisenä osa-alueena. Vaikka lukemista ja lukutaitoa, erityisesti äidinkielellä, on tutkittu monesta näkökulmasta, vieraalla kielellä lukeminen, erityisesti luetunymmärtämisen harjoitukset, tarjoavat vielä uusia mahdollisuuksia tutkimukselle. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, minkälaisia kokemuksia 2. – 6. luokkalaisilla on ollut Niilo Mäki Instituutin Lukumummi ja -vaari –toiminnasta. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin yksilöhaastatteluina ja aineisto analysoitiin fenomengrafisella tutkimusotteella. Lasten kokemukset jakautuivat seuraaviin alakategorioihin: lukeminen lukutuokioiden aikana, lukemisen kehittyminen, sosiaalinen kanssakäyminen lukumummien ja -vaarien kanssa, poissaolo tunneilta lukutuokioiden aikana, muu toiminta ja lukupaikka. Hearing Voices in Dreams: Freud's Tossing and Turning with Speech and Writing

In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud repeatedly claims that there is no original speech in dreams. All dreamed speech is lifted from waking life and used as mutable raw material, whereas thought and writing can occur independently of the dream-work. This article examines Freud's insistence of the unoriginality and mutability of speech, which ostensibly reverses the supposed phonocentric tradition of Western metaphysics. Freud's interpretations, the article suggests, point to the importance of a general linguistic system in the production of meaning in dreams. This article discusses reading circles of adult Finnish as a second language (L2) readers. The books that were read and discussed in the circles were easy-to-read fiction. The study focuses on how the readers interpret what they read and what kind of support they need for their interpretations. The analysis utilizes the concept of scaffolding, used in socio-cultural learning theory. The readers’ reading stances vary from what is literally said in the text to creating their own interpretations of the hidden meanings of the text. A mobile game as a support tool for children with severe difficulties in reading and spelling

We used a randomized controlled trial to investigate if a mobile game, GraphoLearn (GL), could effectively support the learning of first graders (N = 70), who have severe difficulties in reading and spelling. We studied the effects of two versions of the game: GL Reading, which focused on training letter-sound correspondence and word reading; and GL Spelling, which included additional training in phonological skills and spelling. During the spring of first grade, the children trained with tablet computers which they could carry with them during the six-week intervention. The average exposure time to training was 5 hr 44 min. Recognition of the importance of evidence-based technological tools that provide personalized learning opportunities is growing. This paper reports on a pilot study evaluating GraphoLearn for Standard Indonesian, a digital game environment that trains basic reading skills by extensive-but-playful exposure to grapheme–phoneme correspondences. The results obtained from 33 Indonesian first graders show that game progress was found to be a significant predictor of reading and decoding abilities both at the posttest and the 5-month follow-up assessment. In this article the author explores the early development of the identity as a writer of a Finnish-speaking poet Lovisa (or Isa) Asp (1853–1872). She wrote her lyrics in the Finnish language in the 1870s, and she is regarded as the first 19th-century female Finnish poet (whose works were published in Finnish). She began writing poetry (initially in Swedish) as a teenager and started her literary career as a contributor to children’s magazines.
