Luminescence of different modifications of crystalline silicon dioxide: Stishovite and coesite
2003
Abstract Luminescence of very small samples of single crystals of coesite and stishovite has been studied. The spectra were detected under ionizing radiation (X-ray and electron beam) and the decay kinetics of cathodoluminescence in the range of time from 10 ns to 3 ms was measured. The coesite luminescence possesses a broad band at 3 eV with exponential decay about 680 μs at 80 K. The nature of this luminescence was explained as a self-trapped exciton creation in tetrahedron framework. The stishovite luminescence possesses two bands—blue (2.8 eV) and UV (4.7 eV). The UV band intensity grows more than 20 times with irradiation dose from initial level. This shows that the corresponding lumin…
EXCITONS, LOCALIZED STATES IN SILICON DIOXIDE AND RELATED CRYSTALS AND GLASSES
2000
The excitons, localized states in crystalline and glassy silicon dioxide, germanium dioxide were studied by photoluminescent and photoelectric experimental methods. Results were compared with analogous investigations of related crystals, such as aluminum and gallium orthophosphates, and of related glasses, such as silica, sodium silicates, germanates, lead and phosphates glasses. Special attention was made to the influence of oxygen deficiency on localized states of glasses, in general, and to the nature of the 7.6 eV band in reduced silica, in particular.
Luminescence of GeO2 glass, rutile-like and α-quartz-like crystals
2006
Abstract The luminescence of GeO 2 rutile-like crystals was studied. Crystals were grown from a melt of germanium dioxide and sodium bicarbonate mixture. Luminescence of the crystal was compared with that of sodium germanate glasses produced in reduced and oxidized conditions. A luminescence band at 2.3 eV was observed under N 2 laser (337 nm). At higher excitation photon energies and X-ray excitation an additional band at 3 eV appears in luminescence. The band at 2.3 eV possesses intra-center decay time constant about 100 μs at 290 K and about 200 μs at low temperature. Analogous luminescence was obtained in reduced sodium germanate glasses. No luminescence was observed in oxidized glasses…
Defect Luminescence Study in Tetragonal GeO2 Crystals
2000
The perovskite-or rutile-like GeO2 crystals were grown by the “top-seed” method from a fused germanium dioxide solution with sodium bicarbonate. The luminescence was studied under cathode-, x-ray, and photo-excitation. There are two luminescence bands at 550 nm and 400 nm with slow (100–200 µs) and fast (<20 ns) decay, respectively. The luminescence can be excited either by intra-center and electron-hole recombination processes. An analogous luminescence, however with strong non-exponential decay, is observed in glassy materials obtained from the frozen solution. Sodium-germanate glasses melted under oxygen deficient condition also possess similar luminescence, therefore the luminescence is…
The role of nanopowder particle surfaces and grain boundary defects in the sintering of ZnO ceramics
2012
This work focuses on the characteristics of sintered ZnO ceramics and explores the role of source powder morphology in the process of sintering. The source ZnO powders had grained (d = 100 nm) and tetrapod-like (d=50-100 nm, l=3−10 μm) morphologies, they were compacted and sintered at 1200° C. The results have shown that ceramics sintered from the grained powder exhibit relatively high (8%) porosity at grain boundaries and as cavities within grains, which facilitates brittleness. Photoluminescence spectra for these ceramics besides a narrow exitonic band contain a broad "green" luminescence band attributed to defect states. The second ceramics sintered from the tetrapod-like powder has lowe…
Application of graphene quantum dots in heavy metals and pesticides detection
2020
Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) were produced using electrochemical oxidation of graphite rods. Obtained GQDs were gamma-irradiated in the presence of the N atoms source, ethylenediamine. Both structural and morphological changes were investigated using UV-Vis, X-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy. The ability of both types of dots to change PL intensity in the presence of pesticides such as malathion and glyphosate, as well as copper (II) ions was detected. These preliminary results indicated a high potential of produced GQDs to be applied as non-enzymatic PL sensors for the detection of selected pesticides and metal ions. 26th Interna…
Synthesis and characterization of CdS nanoparticles embedded in a polymethylmethacrylate matrix
2005
CdS nanopowder capped with sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate was synthesized by using water-in-oil microemulsions. The CdS nanoparticles of about 5 nm obtained were embedded in polymethylmethacrylate matrix by a photocuring process. The transparent yellow solid compound was characterized by optical absorption and emission spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The properties of this compound were compared with those of the nanopowder dispersed in heptane and in methylmethacrylate. The results obtained indicate that the nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix and do not change in size during the embedding…
Obtaining of nanostructured ZnO coatings using mechanoactivated oxidation
2007
The concept to use nanostructured state of metal at the instant of destruction in air environment was used to obtain nanostructured Zn-ZnO coatings on glass and quartz by mechanical method. Subsequent annealing in the ambient atmosphere, annealing in vacuum and irradiation with 532-nm YAG:Nd laser were used to obtain completely oxidized, transparent ZnO coatings. The saturated with oxygen nanostructured coatings were transformed into nanostructured ZnO coatings after annealing above 773K or irradiation with laser (allowing to reach 673K) in ambient atmosphere. AFM and SEM images show that after annealing ZnO coatings have multi-shaped structure. The formation of ZnO need-like whiskers (d = …
Time-Resolved Luminescence of Nanocrystalline Inorganic Complex Oxides
2007
Two types of complex nanosized oxides – cerium doped Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and CaWO4– have been studied by means of time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. Comparative study of time-resolve luminescence characteristics of cerium doped YAG single crystal, nanopowders and nanoceramic as well as for CaWO4 macro- and nanocrystals has been done. Two components in the decay kinetic of Ce3+ related emission in YAG nanocrystals were detected and it was suggested that a different energy transfer rate to volume and surface Ce3+ ions takes place. It is shown that the segregation of Ce3+ ions near nanoparticles surface and/or dislocation lines plays a crucial role in degradation of light yield of cerium rela…
