The boreal biome, representing approximately one-third of remaining global forests, provides a number of crucial ecosystem services. A particular challenge in forest ecosystems is to reconcile demand for an increased timber production with provisioning of other ecosystem services and biodiversity. Luonnon monimuotoisuuden vähenemistä ei ole saatu pysäytettyä kansainvälisistä sopimuksista huolimatta. Justice in and to nature : an application of the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice

This dissertation applies and develops the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice. It is a new relational approach to justice, whose elements have been introduced by David Schlosberg in his works on environmental and ecological justice. The present study provides a systematisation of the framework and applies it to contemporary environmental topics using the methods of conceptual analysis and case-implication critique. The main outcome of this study is that the elements comprising the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice provide fresh and useful insights into topics like species extinctions and ecosystem wellbeing. The effects of grazing history, soil properties and stand structure on the communities of saprotrophic fungi in wood-pastures

Wood-pastures are threatened anthropogenic biotopes that provide habitat for an extensive group of species. Here we studied the effect of management, grazing intensity, time since abandonment, historical land-use intensity, soil properties and stand conditions on communities of saprotrophic fungi in wood-pastures in Central Finland. We found that the proportion of broadleaved trees and soil pH are the major drivers in the communities of saprotrophic fungi in these boreal wood-pastures. Viherala on merkittävä ja kasvava toimiala. Ilmastonmuutos ja lajien monimuotoisuuden suojelu lisäävät entisestään viheralan painoarvoa. Viheralan kehittäminen edellyttää monipuolista tieteellistä tutkimusta ja kykyä soveltaa uutta tietoa luovasti. Luonnon monimuotoisuuden turvaaminen on tärkeää ekosysteemien vakaan toiminnan ja siten myös ihmisten hyvinvoinnin kannalta. Monimuotoisuuden turvaamiseksi onkin perustettu luonnonsuojelualueita. Niiden sijaintiin ovat kuitenkin vaikuttaneet varsin voimakkaasti taloudelliset tekijät, jotka ovat ohjanneet luonnonsuojelualueiden painottumista syrjäisille ja vähätuottoisille alueille, joiden taloudellinen hyödyntäminen on ollut vaikeaa. Suomessa tämä on tarkoittanut suojelualueverkoston painottumista maan pohjoisosiin.
