Background The research aim was to study the associations of nature diversity with quality of life (QoL) and depressive symptoms among older people, and whether physical activity explains the associations. Methods Community-dwelling people aged 75–90 years (n = 848) living in Central Finland were interviewed in their homes. QoL was assessed with a short version of the World Health Organization Quality-of-Life Assessment (range 0–130, higher score indicates better QoL) and depressive symptoms with the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (range 0–30, higher scores indicate more depressive symptoms). Nature and mountains are often represented as places of healing in literature and the media, especially for white, healthy, and middleclass men. However, discussions on nature and gender in relation to trauma are rare, and a specific discussion on the representation of male mountain climbers’ traumas is missing. Analysoin tutkielmassani Cormac McCarthyn vuonna 1985 ilmestynyttä romaania Blood Meridian. Lähestyn teoksen luontosuhdetta useista näkökulmista, joista keskeisin on Friedrich Nietzschen vallantahdon käsitteen mahdollistama. Tarkastelen tapoja, joilla teoksen kertoja kuvaa luontoa ja toisaalta henkilöhahmojen retorisia luonnon haltuunottoja, yleistyksiä ja retoriikkaa – vallantahdon ilmenemismuotoja. Näen romaanin esimerkkinä historiallisesta modernistisesta fiktiosta, jossa kuvataan nopean yhteiskunnallisen muutoksen ja väliaikaisen kaaostilan luomaa epävarmuutta. Contrasting Norway spruce disturbance dynamics in managed forests and strict forest reserves in Slovakia

Abstract Forest disturbances are intensifying globally, yet regional drivers of these dynamics remain poorly understood. We investigated recent disturbance intensities in Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) forests in Slovakia (Central Europe) with different management objectives in 2000–2017 based on Landsat imagery. We focused on 122 strict reserves without any management, their actively managed surroundings (500 m and 2000 m buffers), and managed production forests beyond the buffer areas. Suomen Akatemian hankerahoitus (TRANAPLAN, 333366) Ekologista kompensaatiota on ehdotettu keinoksi, jonka avulla myös Suomessa voitaisiin ratkoa maankäytön muutoksista aiheutuvan luontokadon ongelmaa. Esimerkiksi tonttituotantokohteiden tai rakennettavan liikenneväylän heikentämät luontoarvot tulisi hyvittää jossain toisaalla, jotta elinympäristöt ja luonnon monimuotoisuus eivät vähenisi hankkeen vaikutuksesta. Ekologisen kompensaation idea ei ole ongelmaton: sen voi perustellusti pelätä edistävän ympäristölle haitallisten hankkeiden toteuttamista.
