2020
This qualitative study examines creativity and innovation in dispersed, journalistic teams. Specifically, we study the factors enabling and constraining creativity and innovation in journalistic work in technology-mediated settings and explore how technology shapes these phenomena in dispersed journalistic teams. The study is motivated by the media industry’s heightened need for creativity and innovation as well as the changing nature of working life where an increasing amount of work is done via information and communication technologies. By closely examining two journalistic teams and their idea sharing and development processes, this study finds that successful creative work and innovati…
Systems thinking and its contribution to understanding future designer thinking
2017
Design is changing in a radical way. The object of design is transforming from tangible objects into services and furthermore, into systems. Increasingly, new insights arise from the interfaces between diverse disciplines – such as art, science and technology – which through various discourses and paradigms have been specialized and driven apart. This discussion paper pinpoints the so-called systems thinkers, hybrid-people, whose methods and habits of work are constituted by the reconciliation of different disciplines. The article aims to bring more understanding to the kind of thinking that is needed in the complex and dynamic environment in which we create and use design today. This discu…

(Un)sustainable creativity? Different manager-employee perspectives in the finnish technology sector
2020
The importance of creativity for working life and in organizations has increased in recent years. At the same time, the theme of sustainability has been intensely debated in research, society, and organizations. Together, creativity and sustainability have sometimes been described as a contradictory phenomenon: they are described in ways that place them in opposition to each other. To better understand creativity and sustainability and their differences from the perspective of people in different positions, we take advantage of a sociocultural approach in which we do not focus only on creative individuals but also on the impact of creativity on both organizational stakeholders and society a…
Neoliberalism, curriculum development and manifestations of ‘creativity’
2015
There is a manifest tendency for national education policy to follow global economic trends. In many western industrialized countries this relationship has intensified or strengthened within the last decades. The strengthening of this relationship has been seen, among other things, as evidence of the growing power of neoliberal ideology. The background reference for this article is the emergence of a neoliberal education policy ideology in the two creativity related strategies implemented by the Finnish government during the first decade of the 21st century. The main focus of the study was the concept of creativity, for it has appeared to be the prevailing trend within the Finnish basic edu…

Koulukritiikkiin vastaaminen luovuuden ja elinikäisen oppimisen asenteen näkökulmista
2017
Tutkimukseni tehtävänä oli selvittää, miten eri alojen asiantuntijat elinikäisen oppimisen elämänkaarelta tukevat luovuutta ja innostusta heidän omissa työtehtävissään. Lisäksi tiedustelin haastateltavilta, millaisena he näkevät opettajuuden roolin nyt ja tulevaisuudessa. Haastattelututkimukseni lähestymisote oli fenomenografinen, joten tarkastelin tutkittavien käsityksiä. Haastattelin neljässä eri kaupungissa yhdeksää asiantuntijaa keväällä 2016. Heihin kuului opettajia, professoreita ja yritysjohtajia. Haastattelut suoritettiin suullisesti ja kirjallisesti sähköpostin välityksellä. Analysoin aineiston fenomenografisella analyysilla. Tutkimustulokset vahvistivat jo olemassa olevaa teoriaa …
