Religious participation in the local communities of 17th-century Eastern Finland
2022
In recent years, the perspective of lived religion has drawn attention toward the everyday religious practices of the laity. In early-modern Europe, the realm of the sacred could be approached in different ways from within the mundane world, and religious practices were tightly intertwined with social life. In local communities, religious ideas and practices taught by the church in varying ways intermingled with traits from local religious traditions. This article examines the different ways of religious participation available to the rural inhabitants of late 17th century Eastern Finland, a part of the kingdom of Sweden during the early modern era. Applying the concept and approach of live…
The Long History of Lutheranism in Scandinavia. From State Religion to the People’s Church
2015
Abstract As the main religion of Finland, but also of entire Scandinavia, Lutheranism has a centuries-long history. Until 1809 Finland formed the eastern part of the Swedish Kingdom, from 1809 to 1917 it was a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire, and in 1917 Finland gained independence. In the 1520s the Lutheran Reformation reached the Swedish realm and gradually Lutheranism was made the state religion in Sweden. In the 19th century the Emperor in Russia recognized the official Lutheran confession and the status of the Lutheran Church as a state church in Finland. In the 20th century Lutheran church leaders preferred to use the concept people’s church. The Lutheran Church is still the maj…

Towards a Religion of Popular Sovereignty, Democracy and Equality : The Lutheran Sermon as a Nexus of Traditional and Modern Discourses on Political …
2019
The external forms of contemporary occasions of Finnish and Swedish national worship organized to celebrate political events differ little from those of early-modern Sweden. However, the expressions of the political values of the national community in them have been totally revolutionized. After discussing social theory on the relationship between religion, nationalism, modernization and secularization and introducing a long-term historical context, this chapter proceeds to analyze two sermons given in 2009 and 2010 to demonstrate the adaptability of the Lutheran religion to modernity: the national churches have turned from advocates of theocratic monarchy and uniformity to preachers of pop…

Religious Revival Movements and the Development of the Twentieth-century Welfare-state in Finland
2019
The Lutheran state church had a monopoly status in Finland for centuries. But its dominance slowly weakened as pietistic revival movements spread in Finland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These movements had religious purposes, but they were also forerunners of profound social and economic changes in Finland in the twentieth century. In challenging the role of the state church, they challenged national unity, spread Western cultural values, emphasized individual rights, and improved the status of women in society. Men of political eminence, such as Anders Chydenius, introduced these influences on Finnish economic life. Overall, the revival movements helped to pave the way for t…
"Miehullisesti sotiman Kuningan ja Isänmaan edestä" : seurakuntapapiston käsitykset yhteiskunnasta Kustaa III:n sodan aikaisissa saarnoissa Ruotsin v…
2015
Papit olivat varhaismodernilla ajalla merkittäviä toimijoita Ruotsin valtakunnan paikallisyhteisöissä, joissa he olivat hengellisten toimiensa ohessa sidoshenkilöitä maallisen esivallan ja tavallisen kansan välillä. Pappien toiminta paikallisyhteisöissä korostui erityisesti sodan kaltaisten kriisitilanteiden aikana, jolloin valtakunnan sisäinen yhtenäisyys nousi keskeiseen rooliin. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan papiston käsityksiä yhteiskunnasta vuosina 1788–1790 käydyn Kustaa III:n sodan aikana. Sotien voidaan katsoa lähtökohtaisesti kärjistäneen ja tuoneen selkeämmiksi papiston saarnastuolista julistamia yhteiskunnallisia näkökantoja. 1700-luvulla yhteiskunta alkoi hiljalleen moniarvoi…
The idea of mission in Finnish clerical Lutheranism during the Continuation War 1941–1944
2014
ABSTRACT. On 25 June 1941 Finland embarked on a war against the Soviet Union, as part of Germany’s Operation Barbarossa. The war that was about to begin could be considered acceptable and even advantageous politically. However, theologically this was not necessarily the case. The topic of the article is how the war between the states of Finland and the Soviet Union could be justified publicly in relation to a religion whose core message is not to kill, to turn the other cheek to – and even love – the enemy. Due to the close and long-lasting relationship between the state, the army and the established church, Lutheran priests had a significant role in the war effort. The analysis shows that …
