Linking species interactions with phylogenetic and functional distance in European bird assemblages at broad spatial scales

Aim: Understanding the relative contribution of different species interactions in shaping community assembly has been a pivotal aim in community ecology. Biotic interactions are acknowledged to be important at local scales, although their signal is assumed to weaken over longer distances. We examine the relationship between positive, neutral and negative pairwise bird abundance distributions and the phylogenetic and functional distance between these pairs after first controlling for habitat associations. Evolution of conflict and cooperation in human groups

The scale of human cooperation and conflict is outstanding and evolutionarily challenging to explain. Cooperative and hostile behaviours have deep evolutionary roots and adaptive functions. However, theoretical models differ in how they explain these functions. Thus, my thesis aims to empirically test functional predictions about human cooperation and conflict. These experiments use a behavioural ecological framework, and pay also attention to the effects of social and developmental environments. As many European countries have language proficiency requirements for obtaining citizenship, language testing is a possible source of social inequality. The ‘Broken Finnish’ project has been set up to ensure test fairness by addressing the proficiency rating in the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (NCLP) test for Finnish in Finland, with a special focus on perceptions of pronunciation and ‘accent’ in relation to the examinee’s L1 and how the raters recognise them. Serum Albumin and Future Risk of Hip, Humeral, and Wrist Fractures in Caucasian Men : New Findings from a Prospective Cohort Study

Objective: Low serum albumin concentration is associated with poor health outcomes, but its relationship with the risk of fractures has not been reliably quantified. We aimed to assess the prospective association of serum albumin with the risk of fractures in a general population. Subjects and Methods: Baseline serum albumin concentrations were measured in 2,245 men aged 42–61 years in the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease study. Hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals) were calculated for incident fractures. Pro gradu- tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää tekijöitä, jotka kiinnittävät erityispedagogista tukea tarvitsevia, ammattiin opiskelevia nuoria kouluun ja opintoihin. Tarkoituksena oli kuulla nuoria sekä tuoda esille heidän omakohtaisia kokemuksiaan. Kouluun kiinnittymistä on tutkittu suomessakin, mutta tutkimus on suuntautunut pääasiassa peruskouluikäisiin. Tässä laadullisessa tapaustutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Jyväskylän yliopiston luokanopettajakoulutuksen esi- ja alkuopetuksen erikoistumisopinnoissa toteutettavaa kummiluokkatoimintaa sekä sen vaikutusta luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden ammatilliseen kehittymiseen. Huomio kohdennetaan myös kummiluokkatoiminnan hyötyihin ja haasteisiin sekä niihin ideoihin, joiden kautta kummiluokkatoimintaa voitaisiin kehittää. Kummiluokkatoiminnalla tarkoitetaan tässä tutkimuksessa Jyväskylän Normaalikoulun alkuopetuksen luokissa tapahtuvaa ohjattua harjoittelua, johon esi- ja alkuopetukseen erikoistuvat opiskelijat osallistuvat opinnoissaan lähes koko lukuvuoden ajan.
