Chalcogen‐Bonding Interactions in Telluroether Heterocycles [Te(CH2)m]n (n=1-4; m=3-7)
2020
The Te…Te secondary bonding interactions (SBI) in solid heterocyclic telluroethers were explored by preparing and structurally characterizing a series of [Te(CH2)m]n (n = 1‐4; m = 3‐7) species. The SBIs in 1,7‐Te2(CH2)10, 1,8‐Te2(CH2)12, 1,5,9‐Te3(CH2)9, 1,8,15‐Te3(CH2)18, 1,7,13,19‐Te4(CH2)20, 1,8,15,22‐Te4(CH2)24, and 1,9,17,25‐Te4(CH2)28 led to the tubular packing of the molecules, as has been observed previously for related thio‐ and selenoether rings. The nature of the intermolecular interactions was explored by solid‐state PBE0‐D3/pob‐TZVP calculations involving periodic boundary conditions. The packing of molecules in 1,7,13,19‐Te4(CH2)20, 1,8,15,22‐Te4(CH2)24, and 1,9,17,25‐Te4(CH2)…
Variation in egg size and offspring phenotype among and within seven Arctic charr morphs.
2022
Maternal effects have the potential to alter early developmental processes of offspring and contribute to adaptive diversification. Egg size is a major contributor to offspring phenotype, which can influence developmental trajectories and potential resource use. However, to what extent intraspecific variation in egg size facilitates evolution of resource polymorphism is poorly understood. We studied multiple resource morphs of Icelandic Arctic charr, ranging from an anadromous morph—with a phenotype similar to the proposed ancestral phenotype—to sympatric morphs that vary in their degree of phenotypic divergence from the ancestral anadromous morph. We characterized variation in egg size and…

Limited effects of size-selective harvesting and harvesting-induced life-history changes on the temporal variability of biomass dynamics in complex f…
2023
Harvesting has been implicated in destabilizing the abundances of exploited populations. Because selective harvesting often targets large individuals, some studies have proposed that exploited populations often experience demographic shifts toward younger, smaller individuals and become more sensitive to environmental fluctuations. The theory of consumer–resource dynamics has been applied to address the impacts of harvesting in simple modular food webs, but harvested populations are embedded in a complex food web in nature. In addition, exploited populations have been shown to undergo trait evolution or phenotypic changes toward early maturation at smaller sizes. Using an empirically derive…

Happamuutta ja emäksisyyttä tuottava ravinto ja 12 viikon yhdistetty kestävyys- ja voimaharjoittelu miehillä ja naisilla : vaikutukset kehonkoostumuk…
2013
Johdanto.

Olemuserosta aste-eroon. Filosofianhistoriallinen katsaus eläimen ja ihmisen välisestä suhteesta.

In this paper, we argue that the classical conception concerning the relation between animals and humans in Western philosophy is anthropocentric. Notwithstanding the traditional outlook which has emphasized the substantial difference between animal and human intellect, we contend that this classical position has been overturned during the epistemological-evolutionist shift culminated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The paper is constructed in the following way. First, we shall survey the classical, anthropocentric position which includes roughly the time line from antiquity to early modern period. Second, we will analyze Hume’s epistemological arguments which undermine the uniqueness of hu…
Viruses and Life: Can There Be One Without the Other?
2010
Viruses are omnipresent, genetically replicating parasites in our biosphere that affect and drive the evolution of life in various ways. Are viruses an inevitable feature of all naturally emerged (although hypothetical) living systems in the Universe or are they only a specialty of our life on Earth? We argue in this discussion that viruses indeed might be present in extraterrestrial, independently emerged biospheres, at least if the process of the origin of life was similar to that on Earth. Viruses are likely to have played important roles in the evolution of early life and thus their presence or absence could dictate the direction of the evolution of life in all living systems. peerRevie…
Social Inclusion and Exclusion in the Life Stories of Deported Asylum Seekers from Finland to Iraqi Kurdistan
2018
This study explores how social inclusion and exclusion manifest as a dynamic continuum in the everyday lived realities of irregular migrants. Based on narratives of Iraqi Kurdish asylum seekers, who were eventually deported from Finland, the analysis depicts the ways in which societal structures, personal negotiations as well as relationships and social networks interplay in lives characterized by multiple locations, transitions and positions. Establishing and maintaining social contacts, belonging to various networks and being able to decide and act are primary factors that help us understand how the narrators relate to the continuum. The participants construct narratives illustrating seve…
