Bone mineral density, structure, distribution and strength in men with prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation therapy
2019
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) improves survival in men with advanced prostate cancer (PCa), but has been associated with compromised skeletal health and increased fracture risk. However, limited previous research has investigated determinants of bone strength beyond DXA-derived areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in this population group. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the effects of ADT in men with PCa on BMD, bone structure, estimates of whole bone strength and cortical bone distribution. A total of 70 ADT-treated men, 52 PCa controls and 70 healthy controls had DXA lumbar spine and proximal femur aBMD and pQCT distal (4%) and proximal (66%) tibia and radius c…
Exercise for bone and cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis
2016
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of high-impact exercise on bone mineral mass and strength, and on knee cartilage composition in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). In addition, the association between knee OA and femoral neck bone structural characteristics in women with mild knee radiographic OA and those without radiographic knee OA was studied. Also, the reproducibility of measuring human knee joint cartilage by the delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI (dGEMRIC) technique was determined in healthy asymptomatic subjects. Data from a 12-month randomized controlled trial (RCT) was used to assess the effects of exercise on bones and cartilages. The tr…
Bone mineral density of the proximal femur after hip resurfacing arthroplasty: 1-year follow-up study
2011
Abstract Background Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is considered a bone-preserving procedure and may eliminate proximal femoral stress shielding and osteolysis. However, in addition to implant-related stress-shielding factors, various patient-related factors may also have an effect on bone mineral density (BMD) of the proximal femur in patients with HRA. Thus, we studied the effects of stem-neck angle, demographic variables, and physical functioning on the BMD of the proximal femur in a one-year follow-up. Methods Thirty three patients (9 females and 24 males) with a mean (SD) age of 55 (9) years were included in the study. BMD was measured two days and 3, 6, and 12 months postoperative…
The impact of Nordic walking on bone properties in postmenopausal women with pre-diabetes and non-alcohol fatty liver disease
2021
This study investigated the impact of Nordic walking on bone properties in postmenopausal women with pre-diabetes and non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD). A total of 63 eligible women randomly participated in the Nordic walking training (AEx, n = 33), or maintained their daily lifestyle (Con, n = 30) during intervention. Bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) of whole body (WB), total femur (TF), femoral neck (FN), and lumbar spine (L2-4) were assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum osteocalcin, pentosidine, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) levels were analyzed by ELISA assay. After an 8.6-month intervention, the AEx group maintained their BM…
Adolescent Sport Participation and Age at Menarche in Relation to Midlife Body Composition, Bone Mineral Density, Fitness, and Physical Activity
2020
This study aimed to investigate the associations of competitive sport participation in adolescence and age at menarche (AAM) with body composition, femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD), physical performance, and physical activity (PA) in middle-aged women. 1098 women aged 47&ndash

Lannerangan ja reisiluunkaulan luun mineraalimassa lievässä polvinivelrikossa postmenopausaalisilla naisilla
2014
Sara Suikkanen (2014). Lannerangan ja reisiluunkaulan luun mineraalimassa lievässä polvinivelrikossa postmenopausaalisilla naisilla. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Fysioterapian pro gradu –tutkielma, 37 sivua. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää onko lievän polven nivelrikon radiologisten luokitusten (Kellgren- Lawrence, KL luokkien 1-2) välillä eroa reisiluun kaulan ja lannerangan tiheydessä (BMD g/cm2) ja mineraalimäärässä (BMC, g) postmenopausaalisilla naisilla. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin kahdesta Jyväskylän yliopiston terveystieteiden laitoksen polvinivelrikkotutkimuksesta (LuRu ja AquaRehab). Tutkimukseen osallistui yhteensä 165 postmenopausaalista naista (ikä 50 - …
