DIFFERENTIAL INFLUENCE OF PERIPHERAL AND SYSTEMIC SEX STEROIDS ON SKELETAL MUSCLE QUALITY IN PRE- AND POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN.
2011
Aging is associated with gradual decline of skeletal muscle strength and mass often leading to diminished muscle quality. This phenomenon is known as sarcopenia and affects about 30% of the over 60-year-old population. Androgens act as anabolic agents regulating muscle mass and improving muscle performance. The role of female sex steroids as well as the ability of skeletal muscle tissue to locally produce sex steroids has been less extensively studied. We show that despite the extensive systemic deficit of sex steroid hormones in postmenopausal compared to premenopausal women, the hormone content of skeletal muscle does not follow the same trend. In contrast to the systemic levels, muscle t…
Lannerangan ja reisiluunkaulan luun mineraalimassa lievässä polvinivelrikossa postmenopausaalisilla naisilla
2014
Sara Suikkanen (2014). Lannerangan ja reisiluunkaulan luun mineraalimassa lievässä polvinivelrikossa postmenopausaalisilla naisilla. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, Fysioterapian pro gradu –tutkielma, 37 sivua. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää onko lievän polven nivelrikon radiologisten luokitusten (Kellgren- Lawrence, KL luokkien 1-2) välillä eroa reisiluun kaulan ja lannerangan tiheydessä (BMD g/cm2) ja mineraalimäärässä (BMC, g) postmenopausaalisilla naisilla. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin kahdesta Jyväskylän yliopiston terveystieteiden laitoksen polvinivelrikkotutkimuksesta (LuRu ja AquaRehab). Tutkimukseen osallistui yhteensä 165 postmenopausaalista naista (ikä 50 - …

Effects of training on bone metabolism in young athletes
2021
Purpose. This study investigated the effects of two types of training on the bone formation marker of osteocalcin and the bone resorption marker of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoenzyme 5b (TRAP5b) in young track and field boys and girls. Methods. The 14-year-old group (10 boys, 10 girls) performed first time an intensive and supervised 8-week plyometric training. In the 17-year-old group (13 athletic boys, 6 control boys, 12 athletic girls, 6 control girls), the normal many-sided track and field training lasted 6 months. Results. Significant increases were noticed in osteocalcin (p < 0.01) both in younger boys and girls. The 20-m sprint performance improved in girls (p < 0.01) and …

Functional Basis of Asymmetrical Lower-Body Skeletal Morphology in Professional Australian Rules Footballers
2020
Hart, NH, Newton, RU, Weber, J, Spiteri, T, Rantalainen, T, Dobbin, M, Chivers, P, and Nimphius, S. Functional basis of asymmetrical lower-body skeletal morphology in elite Australian footballers. J Strength Cond Res 34(3): 791–799, 2020—Bone strength is a product of its material and structural properties and is highly responsive to mechanical load. Given the measureable and adaptable features of bone, and thus relevance to medical screening, injury prevention, and injury management in athletes, this study describes the lower-body skeletal morphology of professional Australian rules footballers. Using a cross-sectional and quantitative study design, 54 professional Australian rules football…
