Sourcing on the internet: Examining the relations among different phases of online inquiry

This study examined students’ engagement in sourcing throughout online inquiry, that is, when they specified the information need, formulated search queries, evaluated online texts, and composed a written product. Participants were 167 upper secondary school students. Students completed an online inquiry task in a restricted online environment that utilized authentic online texts. Students’ prior topic knowledge and reading fluency was measured and controlled for in the analysis. Student evaluations of the credibility and argumentation of online sources

This study investigated upper secondary school students’ skills in evaluating the credibility and argumentative content of a blog text and a YouTube video. Both sources concerned child vaccination, the blog text opposing and the YouTube video supporting it. Students rated each source as credible, fairly credible or non-credible, justified their ratings, and analyzed the argumentation of both sources. Their justifications were analyzed for trustworthiness and expertise and their argument analyses for identification of the main position of the source and the reasons supporting it. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ammatillisen koulutuksen opiskelijoiden (hyvinvointi-, hius- ja kauneusala) kriittistä nettilukutaitoa. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin aikaisemman tiedon, tekstien lukemisjärjestyksen ja perustelutaitojen yhteyttä siihen, kuinka hyvin opiskelijat osasivat arvioida luotettavia (varmentaminen) ja epäluotettavia (kyseenalaistaminen) nettitekstejä sekä erottaa luotettavat tekstit epäluotettavista. Domböckerna och den tidigmoderna tiden hör tätt ihop. I denna uppsats undersöks hur historiker och språkhistoriker utnyttjat domboksmaterial i sin forskning. Metoden är historiografisk och jämförande. Uppsatsen visar att historiker ofta varit intresserade av källkritiska aspekter medan språkhistoriker har intresserat sig för frågor förknippade med språklig variation och förändring. Tutkielmassa selvitän, millaisia internetlukijoita ja -tiedonhakijoita yläkoululaiset ovat. Tarkastelen työssä tarkemmin neljän kahdeksasluokkalaisen internetissä tapahtuvaa tiedonhakuprosessia ja sen eri vaiheita. Usein nuorten ajatellaan olevan niin sanottuja diginatiiveja, jolloin heidän ajatellaan olevan automaattisesti hyviä lähes kaikessa internetiin ja teknologiaan liittyvässä toiminnassa. To survive in the post-truth era, students should be equipped with sufficient sourcing skills. Jo vuosikymmenen ajan on Suomessa keskusteltu ”digitaalisesta historiantutkimuksesta” ja sen rajauksesta, joka on useimmiten tiivistetty laskennallisuuteen. Huomattavasti vähemmän on mietitty digitaalisuuden merkitystä muuhun historiantutkimukseen. Tässä katsauksessa keskitytään perusasioihin historiantutkijoiden tietokantahauissa. Esimerkein osoitetaan, että on helppoa muodostaa virheellinen kuva tietokannan sisällöstä. Käy myös ilmi, ettei totuuden selvittäminen ole aina edes mahdollista. Lopuksi annetaan pari käytännön ohjetta käyttäjille ja toiveita hakuliittymien kehittäjille.
Sourcing practices in online journalism : an ethnographic study of the formation of trust in and the use of journalistic sources

Arguably one of the most important factors of journalistic quality is careful source selection. Studies on online journalism have revealed working conditions which may lead to poor sourcing practices. This article seeks to answer the following questions: What sources do online journalists use, and how do they rationalize their sourcing practices? A total of 17 Finnish online journalists in 7 newsrooms were observed and interviewed over their practices of source searching, evaluation, and use.
