Migrants’ economic integration : problematising economic citizenship

Labour market policies to include migrants in their host societies through strategic integration activities usually relate host country belonging to labour market success, commodifying citizenship. Labour market success, however, is not “belonging;” raising the question of whether “economic citizenship” is a misnomer. National citizenships embed territorial, social and ethnic hierarchies in unequal ways. Migrants at the moment of their mobility are outside these national solidarities, and thus are commodified, with their rights depending on their labour market value. Abstract This paper seeks to advance research on the nexus of language, work-related training and affective capitalism by focusing on an entrepreneurship workshop organized for newly arrived refugees in Germany. Despite the occupational orientation, the primary objective of the workshop was not establishing a business but “empowering” the participants by guiding them to adopt “an entrepreneurial mindset”. AbstractFinland has only relatively recently become a country of immigration, and as a result most immigration and integration policy legislation is also relatively recent. Since the 1990s, the number of migrants to Finland has increased steadily, motivating the adoption of various policy measures to regulate migration and support integration. Tutkimuksessani olen selvittänyt, millaisia kotoutumiskokemuksia on perhesiteen perusteella Suomeen muuttaneilla pääkaupunkiseudulla asuvilla venäläistaustaisilla naisilla, jotka elävät tai ovat eläneet kaksikulttuurisessa liitossa, ja miten heidän käytännön kokemuksensa vastaavat hallinnon kotoutumistavoitteita ja kotouttamispolitiikkaa. Omakohtaisten kokemusten selvittämiseksi olen käyttänyt aineistonkeruumenetelmänä haastattelua. Haastattelin tutkimustani varten yhdeksää naista. Large-scale immigration and the refugee crisis have caused many states to adapt ever stricter civic selection processes. This paper discusses the challenges arising from civic selection from the perspective of recognition theories. The argument is that recognition theories provide good conceptual tools with which to critically analyze civic selection and immigration.
