Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan suomalaisen taiteilija Torsten Wasastjernan (1863–1924) 1800- ja 1900-luvun vaihteeseen sijoittuvaa maalaustaidetta. Wasastjerna opiskeli ja työskenteli Düsseldorfissa ja Pariisissa 1880- ja 1890-luvulla. Tutkielman pääpaino onkin Pariisin kauden aikana ja sen jälkeen syntyneissä teoksissa. Tutkielman tavoitteena on ollut tarkastella Wasastjernan teoksia ja tehdä havaintoja niiden aiheista ja toteutuksesta. Tutkielmassa Wasastjernan taiteesta löydettävissä olevia aihepiirejä on tarkasteltu teosesimerkkien kautta. Abstract It is increasingly acknowledged that creativity cannot be fully understood without considering the setting where it takes place. Building on this premise, we use the concepts of niche construction, scaffolding, coupling, and functional integration to expound on the environmentally situated nature of painters’ studio work. Our analysis shows studios to be multi-resource niches that are customized by artists to support various capacities, states, and actions crucial to painting. When at work in these personalized spaces, painters do not need to rely solely on their “inner” powers of imagination, memory, decision making, and technique to execute their paintings. This article presents the results of material studies focused on identifying and comparing the contents of the pigment palettes of two notable Finnish painters, Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) and Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931). The research methods used comprise energydispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) and polarised light microscopy (PLM). In addition, certain pigments have been identified in colour areas of the works using specular reflection FT-infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and Raman spectrometry. This chapter examines the role of women icon painters in the Finnish Orthodox Church in the second half of the twentieth century. The 1960s witnessed the entry of women professionals into the fields of icon production and related research in Finland. The new role of women as iconographers and icon scholars highlighted the unchallenged division between official and unofficial Orthodoxy as, before, the public representatives and spokespersons of Orthodoxy had been clerics. Itseoppinut taiteilija kompensoi ammatillisen taidekoulutuksen puutetta opiskelemalla itsenäisesti moninkertaisesti koulutettuihin kollegoihinsa verrattuna. Hän epäilee taitojaan ja perehtyy siksi huolella tekniikoihin niitä – ilman ohjausta – luovasti kokeillen. Häneltä puuttuu taidekoulun sosiaalistava ja identiteettiä rakentava verkosto, joten hän etsii taiteilijan malleja kirjallisuudesta ja taidekritiikeistä.
