Spatial belonging is understood as a multidimensional process in which pictorial representation of the environment also plays an important role. However, various intersecting discursive and personal dimensions in the relations between images, photography and spatial belonging make researching the topic quite challenging. This article focuses on a methodology that combines photo-elicitation and visual analysis to elucidate the relations between images and spatial belonging, and to explore the ways in which the mental images created by discursive landscape imagery can affect the formation of people’s place relations and feelings of spatial belonging. Biodiversity patterns of most lotic animal and plant groups remain poorly known, which hinders the implementation of effective conservation, monitoring, and restoration programs. The major aims of this thesis were (i) to examine spatial variation in macroinvertebrate assemblage structure and diversity across natural environmental gradients, and (ii) to assess the utility of such information as the basis of stream conservation programs.

Pro gradu -tutkielmani tavoitteena on tutkia pelkoja matkaopaskirjallisuudessa. Tutkimuksen taustalla vaikuttaa sekä matkailututkimus että yhteiskunnallinen tutkimusote pelkoihin ja riskeihin. Määrittelen pelkoja ja riskejä sosiaalisena ja yhteiskunnallisena ilmiönä. Tutkielma on aineistolähtöinen tutkimus, jonka aineisto käsittää neljä suomalaista matkaopaskirjaa. Tutkimusmetodina käytän kriittistä diskurssianalyysiä, jonka avulla pelot määrittyvät diskursiivisesti representoituina. Olen tulkinnut opaskirjoissa representoituja pelkoja jakamalla ne sosiaalis-poliittisiin, ekonomisiin ja luonnollisiin riskien luokitteluihin. Testing and implementing a new approach to estimating interregional output multipliers using input-output data for South Korean regions

Flegg's location quotient (FLQ) is a useful tool for estimating intraregional output multipliers. This paper uses it as one component when estimating interregional multipliers. Using statistical information criteria and official data for 16 South Korean regions, it is found that the best approach is to combine the FLQ with a simple trade model. The paper explains how the proposed procedure can be implemented for both multiple and individual regions, and also how a region-specific value for the unknown parameter δ in the FLQ formula can be determined. Finally, an illustrative case study of one of the regions is carried out.

Competing institutional logics in Soviet industrial location policy

The Soviet legacy has been widely demonstrated to have had negative impacts on the regional and economic development of Russia. This article studies the mechanisms of competing institutional logics in Soviet industrial location policies as a source of this adverse heritage. The results indicate that prolonged competition between three institutional logics complicated the adoption and practice of consistent industrial location strategies and contributed to structural problems in economic geography. Research shows that gender inequality is still a major issue in academic science, yet academic societies may serve as underappreciated and effective avenues for promoting female leadership. That is, society membership is often self-selective, and board positions are elected (with a high turnover compared to institutions)—these characteristics, among others, may thus create an environment conducive to gender equality.
