Habits of contributing citizenship : Self-help groups in rural Tanzania
2020
The chapter examines self-help groups in rural Tanzania as practices in which citizenship habits are formed. Self-help groups are referred as locally organized groups established to address the needs and challenges of the members. From the point of view of pragmatism, self-help groups provide concrete examples of a specific form of associated life and of a general human activeness in addressing shared problems. Based on interviews and focus-group discussions conducted in Kondoa district with local self-help groups, the characteristics of these practices are analyzed through three themes: the kinds of shared problems the groups address, the governance of internal interaction of the groups, a…

Rural Children’s Perceptions of Parental Involvement in Their Education in Pakistan
2022
Drawing from focus group discussions, this study reports 40 school-aged children’s (12–14 years, boys and girls) perceptions of parental involvement in the context of a developing country with a collectivist culture. The results indicate that despite parental interference, adherence to local customs, poverty, and illiteracy, children felt encouraged by their parents through strategies that reinforced their motivation to continue their education. Extended families’ educated members can also compensate for parents being unable to support their children in learning. The study highlights the role of the socio-cultural context in understanding parental involvement. peerReviewed
Is no One Left Behind? Inclusive Citizenship in Practices of Self-help Groups in Rural Tanzania
2023
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are based on the Agenda 2030 according to which ‘no one is left behind’, highlighting the need for inclusive citizenship at all levels. This article examines self-help groups in rural Tanzania as potential arenas for inclusive citizenship, which is defined as bottom-up practices of membership, participation, and livelihood enhancement. However, inclusive citizenship is also characterised by exclusions. Therefore, while acknowledging the important contribution of self-help groups for development, this article scrutinises the question of patterns of exclusion, first, in practices of self-help groups, and second, in the relationships bet…
Using a phone-based learning tool as an instructional resource for initial literacy learning in rural African families
2020
Background: Despite increased enrolments at primary schools in Zambia, more than half of the children in Grades 1–4 are unable to meet the required minimum standards for literacy. Aim: The study set out to examine the effects of using a phone-based mobile literacy game (Graphogame) to improve literacy skills in children and adults in rural family settings. Setting: The study was conducted in the Katete District, a rural town in the eastern province of Zambia. Methods: Participants were 73 Grade 2 learners (52% boys, mean age 9 years and 48% girls, mean age 10 years) and 37 parents (mean age 36 years). Three literacy tests, measuring letter-sound identification, phonological awareness, spell…
Local knowledge and global justice : From hegemonic development to planetary well-being
2024
This chapter discusses the relationship between critical development studies and planetary well-being, showing how the former can add insights to the latter to build a comprehensive theory. Critical development studies is introduced as a field of study, which provides tools to uncover hidden power dynamics and ecologically destructive patterns in contemporary development. Development is analysed as a particular model of the good life, a societal programme, an epistemological system of power, and a global governance system. Using insights from critical development studies, the chapter points out differences between sustainable development and planetary well-being, noting that sustainable dev…
Oikeuslääketieteellinen kuolemansyyn selvittäminen suomalaisella maaseudulla 1800- ja 1900-luvun vaihteessa
2019
Political community resilience in declining rural areas in Finland
2021
Abstract In this article, we study how declining rural communities build political resilience in Finland. Community resilience is an adaptive process through which rural communities try to maintain their viability in changed circumstances. This process does not entail a submissive attitude, but rather active agency and an effort to influence matters concerning the community’s well-being. We focus on the political dimension of resilience by identifying different local tactics that rural communities adopt to promote their own development following municipal mergers. We classify these tactics into three categories: cooperation, conflict and community-led development. The significant difference…
Arvot, ihanteet ja toiminta : maaseutuidylliset käsitykset epävirallisen hoivatyön voimavaroina
2018
Millaista apua ja hoivaa maaseudun asukkaat tarvitsevat – entä millaista apua paikallinen yhteisö voi tarjota? Maaseudun asukkaiden vapaaehtoisen toiminnan yhdistäminen osaksi paikallista palvelujen tarjontaa voisi ratkaista monia harvaan asuttujen alueiden terveyden edistämisen haasteita. Omaehtoinen, hyvinvointia edistävä yhteisöllinen toiminta on jo osa monien maaseudulla asuvien arkea. Samalla yhteisöllisyys on tärkeä arvo, jota halutaan vaalia osana maaseudun elämäntapaa. Tässä artikkelissa pohdin tämän kulttuurisen voimavaran hyödyntämistä osana paikallisten palvelujen kehittämistä. peerReviewed
