Survival Prediction in Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: A Proof of Concept Study Using Artificial Intelligence for Risk Assessment

2021

Several scoring systems have been devised to objectively predict survival for patients with intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma (ICC) and support treatment stratification, but they have failed external validation. The aim of the present study was to improve prognostication using an artificial intelligence-based approach. We retrospectively identified 417 patients with ICC who were referred to our tertiary care center between 1997 and 2018. Of these, 293 met the inclusion criteria. Established risk factors served as input nodes for an artificial neural network (ANN). We compared the performance of the trained model to the most widely used conventional scoring system, the Fudan score. Pr…

Hidden Markov Random Fields and Direct Search Methods for Medical Image Segmentation

2016

The goal of image segmentation is to simplify the representation of an image to items meaningful and easier to analyze. Medical image segmentation is one of the fundamental problems in image processing field. It aims to provide a crucial decision support to physicians. There is no one way to perform the segmentation. There are several methods based on HMRF. Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRF) constitute an elegant way to model the problem of segmentation. This modelling leads to the minimization of an energy function. In this paper we investigate direct search methods that are Nelder-Mead and Torczon methods to solve this optimization problem. The quality of segmentation is evaluated on grou…

Adding sensor-free intention-based affective support to an Intelligent Tutoring System

2017

Abstract Emotional factors considerably influence learning and academic performance. In this paper, we validate the hypothesis that learning platforms can adjust their response to have an effect on the learner’s pleasure, arousal and/or dominance, without using a specific emotion detection system during operation. To this end, we have enriched an existing Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) by designing a module that is able to regulate the level of help provided to maximize valence, arousal or autonomy as desired. The design of this module followed a two-stage methodology. In the first stage, the ITS was adapted to collect data from several groups of students in primary education, by providi…

Neural networks for animal science applications: Two case studies

2006

Abstract Artificial neural networks have shown to be a powerful tool for system modelling in a wide range of applications. In this paper, we focus on neural network applications to intelligent data analysis in the field of animal science. Two classical applications of neural networks are proposed: time series prediction and clustering. The first task is related to the prediction of weekly milk production in goat flocks, which includes a knowledge discovery stage in order to analyse the relative relevance of the different variables. The second task is the clustering of goat flocks; it is used to analyse different livestock surveys by using self-organizing maps and the adaptive resonance theo…

A Comparison between Habituation and Conscience mechanism in Self–Organizing Maps

2006

In this letter, a preliminary study of habituation in self-organizing networks is reported. The habituation model implemented allows us to obtain a faster learning process and better clustering performances. The liabituable neuron is a generalization of the typical neuron and can be used in many self-organizing network models. The habituation mechanism is implemented in a SOM and the clustering performances of the network are compared to the conscience learning mechanism that follows roughly the same principle but is less sophisticated.

Visual Data Mining in Physiotherapy Using Self-Organizing Maps

2013

The basis of all clinical science developments is the analysis of the data obtained from a particular problem. In recent decades, however, the capacity of computers to process data has been increasing exponentially, which has created the possibility of applying more powerful methods of data analysis. Among these methods, the multidimensional visual data mining methods are outstanding. These methods show all the variables of one particular problem on the whole allowing to the clinical specialist to extract his own conclusions. In this chapter, a neural approximation to this kind of data mining is shown by means of the valuation analysis of the knee in athletes in the pre- and post-surgery of…

Analysis of motor control and behavior in multi agent systems by means of artificial neural networks

2004

Abstract This article gives a short introduction to Self-Organizing Maps, a particular form of Artificial Neural Networks and shows by some examples, how these approaches can be used in order to analyze and visualize time series data originating from complex systems. The methods shown in this article have originally been developed for the analysis of RoboCup robot soccer games, a special kind of so-called Multi Agent Systems. Although this application has no direct connection to biomechanics, the examples shown here may give an impression of the abilities of Neural Networks in the field of Time Series Analysis in general. Because of the abstractness of the methods, it appears to be very lik…

The Hydrothermal System of Solfatara Crater (Campi Flegrei, Italy) Inferred From Machine Learning Algorithms

2019

Two machine learning algorithms were applied to three multivariate datasets acquired at Solfatara volcano. Our aim was to find an unbiased and coherent synthesis among the large amount of data acquired within the crater and along two orthogonal vertical NNE- and WNW-trending cross-sections. The first algorithm includes a new approach for a soft K-means clustering based on the use of the silhouette index to control the color palette of the clusters. The second algorithm which uses the self-organizing maps incorporates an alternative method for choosing the number of nodes of the neural network which aims to avoid the need for downstream clustering of the results of the classification. Both m…

A neural network approach to movement pattern analysis.

2004

Movements are time-dependent processes and so can be modelled by time-series of coordinates: E.g., each articulation has geometric coordinates; the set of the coordinates of the relevant articulations build a high-dimensional configuration. These configurations--or "patterns"--give reason for analysing movements by means of neural networks: The Kohonen Feature Map (KFM) is a special type of neural network, which (after having been coined by training with appropriate pattern samples) is able to recognize single patterns as members of pattern clusters. This way, for example, the particular configurations of a given movement can be identified as belonging to respective configuration clusters, …

Behavior Classification with Self-Organizing Maps

2001

We describe a method that applies Self-Organizing Maps for direct clustering of spatio-temporal data. We use the method to evaluate the behavior of RoboCup players. By training the Self-Organizing Map with player data we have the possibility to identify various clusters representing typical agent behavior patterns. Thus we can draw certain conclusions about their tactical behavior, using purely motion data, i.e. logfile information. In addition, we examine the player-ball interaction that give information about the players' technical capabilities.
