Regulation of immunomodulatory functions by granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in vivo

The present study was designed to investigate in vivo immunomodulatory properties of hematopoietic growth factors. The influence on the activation of cytokine synthesis and on the expression of surface antigens associated with cellular activation of G-CSF or GM-CSF was investigated in cancer patients receiving these factors. One single dose of growth factor was administered to patients with bladder cancer (G-CSF group) or small cell lung cancer (GM-CSF group) before chemotherapy. Impact of smoking habit on adult-onset Still’s disease prognosis, findings from a multicentre observational study

The objective of this study is to describe the possible prognostic impact of smoking habit on adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD) patients, by the assessment of clinical characteristics, life-threatening complications occurrence, and mortality in smokers than non-smokers. A multicentre retrospective study of prospectively followed-up AOSD patients included in Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale (GIRRCS) cohort was conducted. Out of 185 AOSD assessed patients, 45 smokers were identified. Myelosuppressive effects of cytosine arabinoside (Ara‐C) on growth factor‐dependent human long‐term bone marrow cultures (LTBMC)

Freshly isolated human mononuclear cells (5 × 106) were incubated in a Dexter-type long-term bone marrow culture (LTBMC) system to study myelosuppressive effects of cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) in combination with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) or interleukin 3 (IL-3). Differential counts (dc) of the nonadherent cell (nac) populations, starting with culture initiation, were performed weekly. Clinical significance of macrophage colony stimulating factor levels in acute coronary syndrome.

The aim of this paper was to ascertain whether macrophage colony stimulating factor (MCSF) serum levels, measured during the acute phase of coronary syndromes (ACS), are useful to predict short term outcomes. Methods. Seventy-four consecutive patients (mean age: 66±12), admitted to the Intensive Coronary Care Unit of Palermo University Hospital (Italy) affected by ACS were observed; 39 patients showed a non ST elevation (NSTEMI) and 35 showed a ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Abstract The discovery of rhamnose-binding lectins (RBLs) in teleost fish eggs led to the identification of a novel lectin family characterized by a unique sequence motif and a structural fold, and initially proposed to modulate fertilization. Homodimeric murine interleukin 3 (mIL-3) agonists were generated by intermolecular cystine-bonding. Steady-state binding assays and association kinetics performed at 4 degrees C using these agonists revealed specific binding to both the high- and low-affinity receptor. Acetylcholine and nicotine stimulate the release of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor from cultured human bronchial epithelial cells.

Primary cultures of human bronchial epithelial cells (HBE-cells) were established to measure granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) release. HBE-cells showed a basal GM-CSF release (82+/-20 ng/well/24 h; 30 donors), which was increased by interleukin-1 beta(IL-1beta, 1 ng/ml) by 270%. This effect was blocked by 1 microM dactinomycin or 10 microM cycloheximide, i.e. the stimulatory effect of IL-1beta depended on de-novo synthesis. Histamine (100 microM) and acetylcholine ( 100 nM) stimulated GM-CSF release more than two-fold above the baseline.
