Species identification of the psammophilous tenebrionid beetles Phaleria acuminata Juster, 1852 and Phaleria bimaculata (Linnaeus, 1767) from central…
2013
Dominating global arid environments, from desert to coastal dunes, most Tenebrionidae are highly specific in their habitat preferences and display limited dispersal potential, thus exhibiting a remarkable degree of regional genetic and morphological differentiation. The tenebrionid genus Phaleria is speciose and widely distributed, with P. acuminata and P. bimaculata having a wide Mediterranean distribution, with numerous morphological differentiations at population level, often described as different taxa of doubtful taxonomical significance. In order to investigate the variability of the central Mediterranean populations of P. bimaculata and P. acuminata and to compare the results obtaine…
Degeneration of moulting glands in male crickets
1998
The degeneration of the prothoracic glands of the male cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, was analyzed by using an in vitro assay for ecdysteroid release from the moulting glands in last instar nymphs as well as in adult animals, and correlated with light and transmission electron microscopy. Apoptosis was examined by the TUNEL-reaction. The ability to synthesize ecdysteroids reached a peak at the 8th day of the last larval instar, identified as the moulting peak. After adult ecdysis it decreased to barely measurable values. Prothoracic gland degeneration was initiated at the time of the moulting peak, characterized by TUNEL positive reactions, nuclear and cytoplasmatic condensation, a striking …
High myopic patients with and without foveoschisis: morphological and functional characteristics.
2020
Purpose: Myopic foveoschisis (MF) is characterized by the splitting of the retinal layers in the fovea of patients with high myopia (HM). MF may progress into foveal detachment or macular hole formation with consequent loss of central vision. The aim of this study is to investigate morphological and functional changes of the macular region in myopic subjects with and without foveoschisis. Design: Observational, cross-sectional, comparative study. Methods: Forty-eight patients with HM and 24 healthy controls were evaluated by spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and microperimetry (MP-1) tests to assess macular thickness, functionality…
Plasma gangliosides and age-related macular degeneration
2013
Purpose Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial and polygenic disease and is the main cause of vision loss in developed countries after 50 years old. Indeed, dry AMD leads to progressive retinal atrophy and exsudative AMD induces a rapid alteration of the macula through neovascularisation. Gangliosides (GG) make a wide and heterogeneous family of sialic-acid-containing glycosphingolipids, composed of a sugar chain branched on a ceramide. They are major components of cellular membranes and are particularly abundant in the brain and nervous tissue, including retina. They are also found circulating in the plasma. GG are known for their neuroprotective properties in the nervo…

Pollination and reproductive success of two colour variants of a deceptive orchid, Dactylorhiza maculata (Orchidaceae)
2002
Polymorphism in petal colour is common in deceptively pollinated plant species. Most of the deceptively pollinated orchids are food frauds, and in most of them, the deception is not mimetic. These plants have conspicuously coloured flowers which they use as the main attractant of naive pollinators. In a field experiment, we studied the response of bumblebees and other types of flower visitors to colour differences between experimentally paired plants of Dactylorhiza maculata, a nectarless food-deceptive species. In addition, pollen removal, an estimate of male fitness, and fruit production, an estimate of female fitness, were measured in the two colour variants. We found a trend of bumblebe…
