A Holonic Approach to Shakespeare: The Digital Reference System (DRS)

2012

Prefatory RemarksWhen hypertext was made available on the Internet after 1994 it shaped the concepts of public domain and free access. The web server and browsing system that Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau designed, determined the future digital, editorial and cultural developments for traditional audiences and digital natives alike. They quickly became the generalized interface tools and thus contributed to today's editorial standards. As they helped to create this innovative environment called the Internet, they also helped to establish many standards such as URL, URI, HTTP HTML or XML, which provided interoperability amongst different platforms and allowed internationalization.Shake…

The turbulence of images: On imagery, media and ethnographic discourse

1997

As the anthropological theory of politeness has put it, people have universally two kinds of social want. They wish to be close to others, liked and accepted, but they also want some distance, freedom from imposition and respect of mutual difference. These wants, which one may also call basic human rights, are however often violated, and images play an important role in this. Images are ultimately generated in the human mind and may find verbal as well as written and pictorial representation. Tyler [1978] has proposed a typology of mental images based on criteria of conscious control, completeness, abstraction, media and autonomy. These criteria also prove useful when probing into prototypi…

Libanio e Antiochia. La dedizione di un intellettuale alla sua città

2022

This contribution aims at demonstrating how the life of public speaker Libanius was devoted in toto to his city, Antioch of Syria, both as the official sophist of the same city and as professor of numerous generations of students. Lover of traditional paideia and guardian of the classical tradition, Libanius brings back to life in the fullest way the model of the Attic orator, of which Demosthenes had been the highest expression. Combativeness, talent and patriotism therefore unite the Athenian orator and the Antiochene one, and exposed them to the envy of their colleagues and to the consequent accusations of magic, of such a topical character that these allegations weren’t taken into accou…

Apparent magic numbers in embedded Ti-O clusters

2003

Stable clusters constituted of four ${\mathrm{TiO}}_{2}$ entities have been evidenced in nanometer-sized spinel oxides by a combination of diffraction and x-ray-absorption experiments. Contrary to free clusters, the size of the embedded clusters is strongly determined by the constraints imposed by the surrounding matrix so that the magic number of four is in fact specific to the matrix and only then apparent.

Binding energies and pairing gaps in semi-magic nuclei obtained using new regularized higher-order EDF generators

2016

We present results of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations performed using nuclear energy density functionals based on regularized functional generators at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order. We discuss properties of binding energies and pairing gaps determined in semi-magic spherical nuclei. The results are compared with benchmark calculations performed for the functional generator SLyMR0 and functional UNEDF0.

Uncountable classical and quantum complexity classes

2018

It is known that poly-time constant-space quantum Turing machines (QTMs) and logarithmic-space probabilistic Turing machines (PTMs) recognize uncountably many languages with bounded error (A.C. Cem Say and A. Yakaryılmaz, Magic coins are useful for small-space quantum machines. Quant. Inf. Comput. 17 (2017) 1027–1043). In this paper, we investigate more restricted cases for both models to recognize uncountably many languages with bounded error. We show that double logarithmic space is enough for PTMs on unary languages in sweeping reading mode or logarithmic space for one-way head. On unary languages, for quantum models, we obtain middle logarithmic space for counter machines. For binary la…

Introduction: Treasures and Magic

2012

Treasures were magical. Until the nineteenth century, buried treasures were shrouded with intricate webs of narratives. Most of these narratives had magical elements. Vestiges of that treasure magic have survived. In the summer of 2009, while I worked on this book, the spectacular discovery of an Anglo-Saxon treasure in Staffordshire made headlines. Metal detector enthusiast Terry Herbert, who had searched for treasure troves in vain for years, unearthed about 1500 gold and silver objects dating back to the seventh century. In an interview, Herbert told the press: I have this phrase that I say sometimes — ‘spirits of yesteryear take me where the coins appear’ — but on that day I changed coi…

Treasure Hunters’ Magic

2012

In the preceding chapter, we dealt with the magical beings that a treasure hunter had to face, his enemies and unreliable helpers. In this chapter, we will take a look at the treasure hunter’s arsenal. What kinds of magic did he use?

What Are the Rules of the Game? Some Remarks on The Yellow Jacket

1995

The vast caravan out of Ceylon … arrived safely in Europe in April 1884 … There were sixty-seven people, twenty-five elephants … and a great many oxen of various kinds. The ethnographic exhibition included hundreds of different shows, and even the vegetative world was represented in numerous exhibits … My Singhalese troupe was veiled in the ancient wondrous world of India; not only had we captured the vibrant, picturesque, outward appearance of India, but also the shimmer of its mystique. The colourful, captivating sight of the caravanserai, the majestic elephants, partly bedecked in golden saddlery, partly in work harnesses, pulling gigantic loads; the slim, attractive, doe-eyed dancers wi…
