In contrast to spin-only systems the paramagnetic phases of systems with crystal field split ground multiplets exhibit magnetic excitations of finite energy. In the presence of a magnetic exchange coupling the excitons will propagate through the lattice. A measurement of the dispersion allows in principle an insight into the exchange interaction, which is of fundamental importance for the understanding of the magnetic phenomena. Exploration of the double exchange in quantum cellular automata: proposal for a new class of cells

In this communication we propose to considerably extend the class of systems suitable as cells for quantum cellular automata by including magnetic quantum dots and molecular mixed valence dimers exhibiting double exchange. As distinguished from the previous works we propose to use not only charges as the information carriers but also spin degrees of freedom. In this context we focus on the two key points: (1) properties of the magnetic cell as reservoir for charges carrying binary information, and (2) identification of conditions under which spin degrees of freedom can be employed.

The hyperfine structure in the rotational spectra of D2(17)O and HD(17)O: Confirmation of the absolute nuclear magnetic shielding scale for oxygen

Guided by theoretical predictions, the hyperfine structures of the rotational spectra of mono- and bideuterated-water containing (17)O have been experimentally investigated. To reach sub-Doppler resolution, required to resolve the hyperfine structure due to deuterium quadrupole coupling as well as to spin-rotation (SR) and dipolar spin-spin couplings, the Lamb-dip technique has been employed. We review past results and present novel data to illustrate different ways in which TMS can be used to study neural plasticity. Procedural learning during the serial reaction time task (SRTT) is used as a model of neural plasticity to illustrate the applications of TMS. Electromagnetically generated extracorporeal shock waves for gallstone lithotripsy: in vitro experiments and clinical relevance.

. First generation shock wave sources have been proved to disintegrate gallstones effectively, but they require the immersion of the patient's body in a tank of water. A recently developed second generation shock wave source (Siemens-Lithostar, Erlangen, FRG) generates shock waves electromagnetically. It presents several novel features. In particular the waterbath can be omitted and due to lower shock wave pressure general anaesthesia is not required. Monolacunary Keggin polyoxometalates connected to ten 4d or 4f metal atoms.

The rational self-assembly of mono-lacunary Keggin clusters with 4d and 4f metal salts via a conventional method has yielded two novel polyoxometalate-based 4d-4f heterometallic compounds containing lacunary Keggin anions connected to ten metal atoms: {[Ag{Ag2(H2O)4}{Ln(H2O)6}2H ⊂ {SiW11Ln(H2O)4O39}2]·nH2O (Ln = Ce and n = 7 for 1, Ln = Pr and n = 3 for 2). A modification of magnetic-based solvent-assisted dispersive solid-phase extraction (M-SA-DSPE) has been employed for the determination of the biomarkers cortisol and cortisone in saliva samples. M-SA-DSPE is based on the dispersion of the sorbent material by using a disperser solvent like in dispersive solid phase extraction (SA-DSPE) but a magnetic sorbent is used like in magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (M-DSPE). Thickness measurement of soft thin films on periodically patterned magnetic substrates by phase difference magnetic force microscopy

The need for accurate measurement of the thickness of soft thin films is continuously encouraging the development of techniques suitable for this purpose. We propose a method through which the thickness of the film is deduced from the quantitative measurement of the contrast in the phase images of the sample surface acquired by magnetic force microscopy, provided that the film is deposited on a periodically patterned magnetic substrate. An experimental study on long term outcomes after magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets

Abstract Background/Purpose Previous studies have shown that a patent, watertight esophageal anastomosis can be accomplished safely using specially-shaped magnets in piglets. However, it is unclear whether such a magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis (MECA) remains patent in the long-term. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of MECA in an experimental pig model over an observation period of 2 months.
