Assembling Magnetic Blocks: A Strategy to Control the Nuclearity and Magnetic Properties of Polynuclear Complexes

1996

Synthetic strategies dealing with the polymerization of either di-μ-hydroxocopper(II) complexes or 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym)-containing first row transition metal ions allow the preparation of polynuclear compounds whose structures and magnetic properties are presented here. The influence of structural and chemical parameters on the magnitude of the singlet-triplet energy gap (J) in di-μ-hydroxocopper(II) complexes [LCu(OH)2CuL]2+ with L = 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) and bpym is analyzed and discussed. Special attention is devoted to nature of the counterion which allows the preparation of hydroxo-bridge copper(II) cubane and double cubane type complexes where all the intramolecular magnetic inter…

Expanding the 3d-4f heterometallic chemistry of the (py)2CO and pyCOpyCOpy ligands: structural, magnetic and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of two F…

2011

Complex [Fe(II)Gd(III){pyCO(OEt)pyCOH(OEt)py}(3)](ClO(4))(2) (1) crystallizes in the Cc space group and contains one hexacoordinate ferrous ion and one enneacoordinate Gd(III) ion. Complex [Fe(2)(II)Gd(III){pyCO(OEt)py}(4)(NO(3))(H(2)O)][Gd(NO(3))(5)](0.5)(ClO(4)) (2) crystallizes in the C2/c space group and contains two hexacoordinate ferrous ions and one octacoordinate Gd(III) ion. Both complexes have been prepared by the metal-assisted ethanolysis of ligands di-2,6-(2-pyridylcarbonyl)pyridine (pyCOpyCOpy, dpcp) and di-2-pyridyl ketone ((py)(2)CO, dpk), which exhibit similar structures. Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of 2 revealed the presence of two quadrupole-split doublets of equal in…

Ligand design for multidimensional magnetic materials: a metallosupramolecular perspective.

2008

The aim and scope of this review is to show the general validity of the ‘complex-as-ligand’ approach for the rational design of metallosupramolecular assemblies of increasing structural and magnetic complexity. This is illustrated herein on the basis of our recent studies on oxamato complexes with transition metal ions looking for the limits of the research avenue opened by Kahn's pioneering research twenty years ago. The use as building blocks of mono-, di- and trinuclear metal complexes with a novel family of aromatic polyoxamato ligands allowed us to move further in the coordination chemistry-based approach to high-nuclearity coordination compounds and high-dimensionality coordination po…

From Bowls to Capsules: Assembly of Hexanuclear Ni II Rings Tailored by Alkali Cations

2020

An anionic hexanuclear NiII metallamacrocycle with endo and exo linking sites has been employed as a building block to generate a series of capsules and bowls of nanometric size. The supramolecular arrangement of the {Ni6 } rings was tailored by the size of the alkali cations, showing the transition from {Ni6 -M2 -Ni6 } capsules (M=LiI and NaI ) to {Ni6 -M} bowls (M=KI and CsI ). The alkyl co-cations are determinant to stabilize the assemblies by means of CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions on the exo side of the metallamacrocycles. The effect on the topology of the supramolecular assemblies of the cation size, cation charge, Et3 NH+ or Me4 N+ counter cations has been analyzed. Magnetic measurements reveal…

Synthesis and magnetic properties of an iron 1,2-bisthienyl perfluorocyclopentene photochromic coordination compound

2011

Abstract The coordination compound Fe(BM-4-PTP) 2 (NCS) 2 ⋅2MeOH ( 1 ) including the photoisomerizable ligand BM-4-PTP (1,2-bis(2′-methyl-5′-(pyrid-4″-yl)thien-3′-yl)perfluorocyclopentene) was obtained as an orange powder. The powder turns blue upon photocyclization of the 1,2-bisthienyl photochromic ligand induced by UV light irradiation at room temperature. Photocycloreversion is obtained by visible light irradiation of the material in the solid state. The orange and blue powders were investigated over the temperature range (5–293 K) and pressure range (1 bar–12 kbar) by magnetic susceptibility measurements and variable temperature 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. The photo-induced colour ch…

Photoswitchable coordination compounds

2001

Photoswitchable compounds represent an attractive class of materials in coordination chemistry. Recent progress dealing with transition metal compounds involving photo-induced changes of the magnetic and/or optical properties to long-lived metastable states are covered in the present review article. The basic photophysical phenomena together with representative examples such as nitroprusside derivatives, relevant spin crossover complexes, stilbenoid complexes and finally Prussian blue analogues are discussed. Some possible applications regarding energy and information storage are suggested at the end.

Magneto-structural versatility of copper(II)-3-phenylpropionate coordination polymers with N-donor coligands.

2015

A novel series of copper(II) coordination polymers [Cu2(O2CC8H9)4(pyz)]n (1), [Cu2(O2CC8H9)4(dps)]n (2), {[Cu(O2CC8H9)2(dps)(H2O)]·H2O}n (3), {[NaCu(O2CC8H9)2(bpm)(NO3)]·H2O}n (4), and [Cu4(O2CC8H9)6(OH)2(bpp)2]n (5) [O2CC8H9− = 3-phenylpropionate anion, pyz = pyrazine, dps = di(4-pyridyl)sulfide, bpm = 2,2′-bipyrimidine, and bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane] have been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. Compounds 1 and 2 belong to a large group of copper(II) carboxylates where bis-monodentate pyz (1) and dps (2) ligands connect the paddle-wheel [CuII2(μ-O2CC8H9)4] units leading to alternating copper(II) chains. The structure of 3 consists of uniform chains of trans-[CuII(O2CC…

Comb-Branched Polymers:  Monte Carlo Simulation and Scaling

1996

The Monte Carlo simulation technique (the bond fluctuation model) has been used for the study of the equilibrium conformations of comb-branched polymers consisting of a long flexible main chain and side chains grafted at a regular separation onto the main chain. The solvent has been supposed to be good (athermal) for the main and side chains. The global conformation and the gyration radius of the polymer, as well as the local conformational structure of the comb, have been analyzed as functions of the length of the side chains and spacers. The effect of induced rigidity of the comb due to the interaction between side chains has been observed. We have found the results of the simulation to b…
