Electrical control of 2D magnetism in bilayer CrI3

The challenge of controlling magnetism using electric fields raises fundamental questions and addresses technological needs such as low-dissipation magnetic memory. The recently reported two-dimensional (2D) magnets provide a new system for studying this problem owing to their unique magnetic properties. For instance, bilayer chromium triiodide (CrI3) behaves as a layered antiferromagnet with a magnetic field-driven metamagnetic transition. Abstract The uppermost 50 cm of sediments from the 23 m deep lacustrine basin of Nurmijarvi, a lake in south-central Finland, are composed of the clastic-biogenic type of varves. We use multiple dating methods to render a sediment chronology that is as precise and accurate as possible for future paleoenvironmental research on this high-fidelity sedimentary archive. The 250-year-long varve chronology contains a chronological error of ±2%, as estimated based on repeated varve counts. Polyoxometalates in Langmuir–Blodgett films: toward new magnetic materials

Abstract Polyoxometalates having various structures and properties can be organized by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. The adsorption of such polyanions along a positively charged monolayer of DODA (dimethyldioctadecylammonium) induces large changes in the compression isotherm and enables the transfer of the Langmuir film onto solid substrate. X-ray diffraction and infrared dichroism experiments demonstrate that the polyoxometalates are organized in monolayers within the LB films. Furthermore, these magnetic multilayers were characterized by their paramagnetic susceptibility measured by a SQUID magnetometer.

A new series of cyanido-bridged {LnIIIWV} heterobinuclear complexes of formula [LnIII(pyim)2(i-PrOH)(H2O)2(μ-CN)WV(CN)7]·2H2O [Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), Ho (4), and Er (5); pyim = 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-pyridine) and i-PrOH = isopropyl alcohol] were synthesized by one-pot reaction between (NH3Bu)3[W(CN)8] and [Ln(pyim)2]2+ complexes (generated in situ by mixing the corresponding LnIII ions and the pyim ligand). Compounds 1–5 are isomorphous and crystallize in the monoclinic system P21/n space group. Abstract Heterometallic compounds containing Sm(III), bivalent cations M (M = Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, Ca, Mg), and 2′,2′-oxydiacetate (oda) as connecting ligand have been prepared and characterized. The complexes can be formulated as [Sm 2 M 3 (oda) 6 ] · xH 2 O. The structure of [Sm 2 Cu 3 (oda) 6 (H 2 O) 6 ] shows the presence of the Sm(III) coordinated by six carboxy and three ether oxygen atoms, and the Cu(II) cation bonded to four carboxy oxygens and two molecules of water. An open 3D framework is observed, containing large hexagonal channels. The first lanthanide complex of a 1,2,4-benzotriazinyl radical (1), Dy(1)(tbacac)3 (2, tbacac = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptane-dionato), was synthesised and found to have an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state with a metamagnetic phase diagram and a critical field of 0.91 T at 1.85 K. The application of a small dc field revealed the single-molecule magnet behaviour of 2, illustrating the coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetic order and slow relaxation of the magnetization. peerReviewed

Molecular nanomagnets based on mononuclear metal complexes, also known as single-ion magnets (SIMs), are crossing challenging boundaries in molecular magnetism. From an experimental point of view, this class of magnetic molecules has expanded from lanthanoid complexes to both d-transition metal and actinoid complexes. A new series of cyanide-bridged assemblies, {KH[Ln2(2,3-pzdc)2(CH3OH)(H2O)7][M(CN)8]}·5H2O (Ln3+ = Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy; M4+ = Mo and W), were synthesised by self-assembling lanthanide ions and octacyanometallate ions in the presence of pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (2,3-H2pzdc). These compounds have a 3D structure in which octagon-like Ln4M4(CN)8 rings are connected through a second Ln3+ center via the carboxylate groups of one 2,3-pzdc. The resulting 1D channels are filled with K+ ions and lattice water molecules.
