“Is This an Advertisement or a Personal Account?” : Commercialisation of Lifestyle Blogs in Finland
2015
When blogging first appeared on the map of social media in the mid-1990s, the majority of bloggers were male writing for example about the developments of the online world, or if they were political reporters, looking for a new platform to publish their perhaps more controversial work. Today many blogs fall into the category of lifestyle blogs, which have thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands of individual readers per month throughout the world. In fact, professional blogging is one of the fastest growing phenomena online. It is driven mostly by relatively young women and promoted by the commercialisation of the blogging world, also known by bloggers as “the blogosphere”. During the p…
Pk-yritysten näkemyksiä markkinointiviestinnästä ja alueellisesta mediamainonnasta
2015
Tutkimus toteutettiin haastattelemalla kahdeksan yrityksen markkinoinnista vastaavia henkilöitä, jot…
What kind of values could be recognised in green messages, with special emphasis on children
2015
A lot of attention has been put on analysing why people behave in a certain way in many different aspects of life. Sustainability and environmental protection has started as early as in the 60s, but it was not until the early 90s that corporations showed serious attempts to turn towards greener business practices. Various researchers have highlighted the tremendous responsibility of companies and the role of marketing for a more sustainable society. Furthermore, it has been noted that values tend to be the base for environmental conduct, be it awareness, concern, worldview, attitude or behaviour itself. In general, it looks like that the more a person feels connected to nature, the less lik…

The Hyperreal Gambler : On the Visual Construction of Men in Online Poker Ads
2017
Online poker, like gambling in general, is predominantly a male activity. Thus, poker ads most often depict men as their protagonists. According to Jean Baudrillard, advertising can be seen as a ‘plebiscite whereby mass consumer society wages a perpetual campaign of self- endorsement.’ Ads often use stereotypical imagery for establishing a shared experience of identification with the consumer, and since their role is to sell rather than to portray the realities of life, they often have an exaggerated and monolithic – or, hyperreal – way of representing gender. This article offers an analysis of the ways in which men are portrayed in the ads of Poker Magazine Finland in the volume of 2009 (a…
