Localising African popular music transnationally: ‘Highlife-Travellers’ in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s
2008
The paper argues that a critical toehold for understanding the formation, modernization, and popularity of Highlife in the 1950s is its transnational dimension. To corroborate this claim, the paper puts emphasis on Highlife musicians in the UK, especially London, during this time, their musical activities and productions there, and the effects of their journeys on popular music. The growing evidence that cultural practices and processes in different locales, across national and continental boundaries, were interrelated in the making of Highlife, asks for a multi-sited study of Highlife especially with regard to the musical creativity and productivity of 1950s and 1960s. It requires further …
The Mediterranean in the foreign policy of the second Spanish republic
1998
The principal reference points for the foreign policy of the Second Republic were the League of Nations and the Anglo‐French axis. In both areas of policy making, the conditioning factor was Spain's position geographically and strategically and its interest in the security of the western Mediterranean. Its participation in the successive plans to draw up a Mediterranean pact and in the Mediterranean conflicts of the period was characterized by its role as a secondary figure within that axis and by its policy of adaptation as a neutral country to the crisis of the system of collective security.
Filming among the Hamar
1988
I've often been asked how I came to take part in Robert Gardner's films in Hamar. What do I think of his film Rivers of Sand and how has working with him influenced the concept of ethnography in my films, Der Sprung uber die Rinder (The Leap Across the Cattle), Der Herr der Ziegen (The Father of the Goats), and Gesang der Hamar Hirten (The Hamar Herdsman and his Music). I've tried to answer these questions and to explain how Jean Rouch and the cinema verite have also influenced me. My films were shot in strict collaboration with the Hamar, determining the choice of themes, collective efforts in the production of the films, and in their analysis.

Decolonising European minds through Heritage
2019
By analysing three museums exhibition, this article investigates how the history of European colonialism is approached in an attempt to identify potential for decolonising European minds. The case studies consist of a temporary exhibition (2016–2017) concerning German colonialism at the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin; the permanent exhibition of the House of European History in Brussels and the permanent exhibition of the Sagres Promontory (Portugal), a heritage site related to the conquest of the Americas. The analysis will focus on three aspects: 1) acknowledgement of connections between colonial histories and their contemporary influences in and for Europe; 2) the role of histor…

Complexity and Action: Reflections on Decision Making and Cybernetics.
2013
This paper highlights some theoretical and epistemological reflections about the relevance of action for managerial studies. These reflections show how the cybernetic paradigm of complexity management can be used for better decision making that unites knowledge and action in a comprising, dynamic, and evolving approach. Cybernetics can help to overcome the fear of decision making in the face of uncertainty in complex scenarios, and can be an effective tool for improving the viability and competitiveness of firms in the twenty-first century.

L'intérêt de l'animation comme support au code de la route pour les candidats sourds
2018
Entretiens Jacques Cartier, LYON, FRANCE, 13-/11/2018 - 14/11/2018; This article focuses on the interest of using dynamic Highway Code learning materials, particularly for deaf people who present low temporal skills. Twenty-one deaf and 24 hearing candidates of Highway Code were involved in a decision-making task. Four types of driving situations (overtaking, insertion on roundabout, insertion on highway and crossing an intersection) from which participants have to decide to go or not to go were presented in two different formats (static vs animated) and in two level of difficulty (simple vs complex). Results showed better performance in animated than in static condition, especially in deaf…
Yeast Population Dynamics during the Fermentation and Biological Aging of Sherry Wines
2001
ABSTRACTMolecular and physiological analyses were used to study the evolution of the yeast population, from alcoholic fermentation to biological aging in the process of “fino” sherry wine making. The four races of “flor”Saccharomyces cerevisiae (beticus, cheresiensis, montuliensis, androuxii) exhibited identical restriction patterns for the region spanning the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS-1 and ITS-2) and the 5.8S rRNA gene, but this pattern was different, from those exhibited by non-florS. cerevisiaestrains. This flor-specific pattern was detected only after wines were fortified, never during alcoholic fermentation, and all the strains isolated from the velum exhibited the typ…
