Interplay of spin-dependent delocalization and magnetic anisotropy in the ground and excited states of [Gd2@C78]− and [Gd2@C80]−

The magnetic properties and electronic structure of the ground and excited states of two recently characterized endohedral metallo-fullerenes, [Gd2@C78]- (1) and [Gd2@C80]- (2), have been studied by theoretical methods. The systems can be considered as [Gd2]5+ dimers encapsulated in a fullerene cage with the fifteen unpaired electrons ferromagnetically coupled into an S = 15/2 high-spin configuration in the ground state. The microscopic mechanisms governing the Gd-Gd interactions leading to the ferromagnetic ground state are examined by a combination of density functional and ab initio calculations and the full energy spectrum of the ground and lowest excited states is constructed by means …

Effects of side chains of oxatub[4]arene on its conformational interconversion, molecular recognition and macroscopic self-assembly.

A series of oxatub[4]arenes with different alkyl side chains have been synthesized. The conformational interconversion, molecular recognition and macroscopic self-assembly behaviour of oxatub[4]arene derivatives were investigated. The difference in side chains slightly changes the binding affinities, but results in different self-assembly morphologies at the solid state.

Chiroptical inversion of a planar chiral redox-switchable rotaxane.

Reversible redox-switching of a planar chiral [2]rotaxane with a tetrathiafulvalene-bearing crown ether macrocycle generates a complete sign reversal of the main band in the ECD spectrum, as shown by experiment and rationalised by DFT calculations.

Experimental studies on carbon nanotubes and graphene functionalized via physical adsorption with cellulose and avidin

In this Thesis I have experimentally studied structural, electronic, and optical properties of hybrids of nanocarbon materials, carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene, and certain biomacromolecules. The latter are especially xylan, a type of hemicellulose, and avidin, an important protein. Complexes of CNT with hemicellulose are attractive because the hybrid material is soluble in water. The conductive transport properties of thin films of CNT /hemicellulose have been systematically studied with different experimental tools. Characterization of viral nanoparticles and virus-like structures by using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS)

Jouni Toivola tarkasteli väitöskirjatutkimuksessaan geneettisesti manipuloituja viruspartikkeleita. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin fluoresenssikorrelaatiospektroskopiaa. Mittauslaite on harvinainen, sillä Pohjoismaissakin niitä on vain kaksi: toinen Jyväskylän yliopiston Nanoscience Centerissä ja toinen Tukholman Karoliinisessa Instituutissa.
