Viability and integrity of cell present in particulate bone collected during the preparation of the implant site: a preliminary study

2014

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate viability and integrity of cells (Osteoblasts and Osteocytes) present in the particulate bone (Bone Chips), obtained during the preparation of the implant site. Methods: Four patients aged between the IV and the VI decade presenting edentulous areas class III of Cawood and Howell were selected. All patients suffering from systemic and oral diseases and smoking were excluded. The surgeries were performed with the conventional technique, full-thickness flap, and the implant sites were prepared with large coils calibrated burs mounted on surgical micromotor at a speed of 600 rpm and external irrigation of saline solution previously cooled . The partic…

Lymphocyte apoptosis in children with central nervous system tuberculosis: a case control study

2011

Abstract Background Studies of the apoptosis mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis have suggested that Mycobacterium tuberculosis can actively interfere with the apoptosis of infected cells. In vivo studies have been performed in adult populations but have not focused on this process in children. In the present study, we analyzed spontaneous T lymphocyte (PBT) apoptosis in the peripheral blood of children with central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS TB), before and after chemotherapy, and compared the results with healthy controls. Methods A case-control study was conducted from January 2002 to June 2009. It included 18 children with CNS TB and 17 healthy controls. Sponta…

Genetic disorders and periodontal health: A literature review

2009

Periodontal diseases include a group of infl ammatory diseases characterized by progressive destruction of the periodontium. Dental plaque is the initiator of periodontal disease, but disease severity and response to treatment are determined predominantly by host-based risk factors. Genetic disorders can modify the host defense mechanisms or infl uence the homeostasis of the periodontium during childhood, thus increasing patients’ susceptibility to periodontal disease. The periodontal manifestations of these disorders may persist into adulthood. When dealing with periodontal problems, particularly in children and adolescents, it is advisable to establish a differential diagnosis of periodon…

The role of cefditoren in the treatment of lower community-acquired respiratory tract infections (LRTIs): from bacterial eradication to reduced lung …

2014

Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), including pneumonia and acute exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), are among the most common diagnoses in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Due to the burden of LRTIs healthcare providers must adopt practices focused on improving outcomes with the aim to reduce treatment failure and antibiotic resistances. Moreover, the role of acute and chronic infection in the pathogenesis of COPD has received considerable attention, since chronic infection can contribute to airways inflammation and COPD progression. This review discusses the role of cefditoren for the treatment of LRTIs, compared with the definition of "appropria…

Effects of sleep apnea and kidney dysfunction on objective sleep quality in nondialyzed patients with chronic kidney disease: an ESADA study

2020

Study Objectives: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often report poor sleep quality, but they commonly exhibit OSA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of OSA severity and of estimated glomerular filtration rate impairment on objective sleep quality in nondialyzed patients with CKD, defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73m2. Methods: Polysomnographic sleep characteristics were compared between patients with (n = 430) and without CKD (n = 6,639) in the European Sleep Apnea Database cohort. Comparisons were repeated in 375 patients with CKD and 375 control patients without CKD matched for sleep center, age, sex, and AHI, and in 310 matche…
