Climate change engenders a better Early Warning System development across Sub-Saharan Africa: The malaria case

2022

It is expected that diseases are likely to spread to newer areas, and high-income countries may experience some illnesses that may have been restricted to low or middle-income countries. In addition, following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the present study noted that climate change is likely to have many effects on the spatial and temporal distribution of malaria in many Sub-Saharan African countries. This study examines climate change effects on the geographical distribution of malaria occurrence and how extreme climatic events may perhaps be determining factors in the range of vectors for human diseases in SSA in the nearest future. Here, the study appraisals the symbiot…

Inhibition of activated STAT5 in Bcr/Abl expressing leukemia cells with new pimozide derivatives.

2014

STATs are transcription factors acting as intracellular signaling after stimulation with cytokines, growth factors and hormones. STAT5 is also constitutively active in many forms of cancers, including chronic myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Recently, literature reported that the neuroleptic drug pimozide inhibits STAT5 phosphorylation inducing apoptosis in CML cells. We undertook an investigation from pimozide structure, obtaining simple derivatives with cytotoxic and STAT5-inhibitory activity, two of them markedly more potent than pimozide.

The ocular manifestations in IBD screening (OMIS) questionnaire: pilot study on detection of ocular involvement in inflammatory bowel diseases.

2020

Purpose: To assess the usefulness of a dedicated questionnaire for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) treated with biological drugs for the detection of ocular extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs). IBD can cause extraintestinal symptoms including ocular complaints which are frequently ignored and may be associated with significant morbidity, including blindness. Methods: We developed a questionnaire, named Ocular Manifestations in IBD Screening (OMIS) questionnaire, after agreement between gastroenterologists and ophthalmologists. The questionnaire was administered by a non-ophthalmologist physician to 96 IBD patients treated with biological drugs. Results: 35 patients (36.5%)…

Autoantibody Inhibitor Eradication In Acquired Hemophilia Associated with Cancer: a Retrospective Analysis

2010

Abstract Abstract 1418 Introduction: Acquired hemophilia (AH), a rare autoimmune disorder primarily of adults, is typically characterized by the presence of IgG oligoclonal antibodies to the clotting factor VIII protein (FVIII). About 10–15% of patients with AH have an underlying malignancy, but the etiologic relationship of cancer to formation of FVIII inhibitor is yet to be determined. To date, there have been no published, comprehensive reviews on the efficacy of various treatments for AH in the context of either solid tumor or hematologic malignancies. Therefore, we have systematically reviewed 86 patients with cancer-associated AH from our own cancer center and from the published liter…

Impact of temperature on obstructive sleep apnoea in three different climate zones of Europe: Data from the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA)

2021

Recent studies indicate that ambient temperature may modulate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) severity. However, study results are contradictory warranting more investigation in this field. We analysed 19,293 patients of the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) cohort with restriction to the three predominant climate zones according to the Koppen-Geiger climate classification: Cfb (warm temperature, fully humid, warm summer), Csa (warm temperature, summer dry, hot summer), and Dfb (snow, fully humid, warm summer). Average outside temperature values were obtained and several hierarchical regression analyses were performed to investigate the impact of temperature on the apnea-hypopnea index …

Efficacy and safety of dolutegravir and doravirine dual therapy in the context of antiretroviral therapy switch: 48 weeks analysis.

2022

Dual therapy in HIV represents an attractive opportunity for HIV infected people in virologic suppression Dual therapy regimens should achieve and maintain viral suppression and immunologic control while minimizing short and long term AEs, improve adherence and convenience and reduce drug drug interactions and costs To date, there are few clinical data to support a dual regimen with dolutegravir and doravirine 1 The individual efficacy of both doravirine and dolutegravir suggests that concomitant administration of these two molecules as part of an NRTI sparing regimen could be a viable option, although to date there are no studies in the HIV infected population The aim of our study is to in…

Mucosal immunology and probiotics.

2013

The cross-talk between the mucosa-associated immune system and microbiota is critical in mucosal tissue homeostasis as well as in protection against infectious and inflammatory diseases occurring at mucosal sites. This recent evidence has paved the way to therapeutic approaches aimed at modulating the mucosa-associated immune system using probiotics. Different strains of probiotics possess the ability to finely regulate dendritic cell (DC) activation, polarizing the subsequent T cell activity toward Th1 (e.g. Lactobacillus (Lb) acidophilus), Th2 (Lb.reuteri and Bifidobacterium bifidum) or, as more recently demonstrated, Th17 responses induced by specific strains such as Lb.rhamnosus GG and …

Prevalence and risk factors of actinic keratosis in patients attending Italian dermatology clinics

2017

Background: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common keratinocyte intraepidermal neoplasia. Objective: To assess AK prevalence and potential risk factors in patients attending Italian general dermatology clinics. Materials & methods: This retrospective study was conducted on clinical data from consecutive white outpatients aged ≥30 years, attending 24 general dermatology clinics between December 2014 and February 2015. AK prevalence (entire population) and multivariate risk factor analysis (patients with current/previous AK and complete data) are presented. Results: AK prevalence in 7,284 patients was 27.4% (95% CI: 26.4-28.4%); 34.3% in men and 20.0% in women (p<0.001). Independent AK ris…
