Gingivitis
2019
Gingival inflammation is caused by bacterial plaque (dental biofilm) that accumulates daily on the teeth. Results in redness, slight swelling, or "puffiness" of the gums and bleeding on tooth brushing. Treatment involves thorough professional tooth cleaning and effective daily removal of dental plaque by tooth brushing and cleaning between the teeth. Necrotizing gingivitis (NG) is a more serious condition that is mainly found in developing countries and is associated with people with severe malnutrition or people living with HIV with low CD4 counts.

Probiotics and oral health
2012
Probiotics are living microorganisms (e.g., bacteria) that are either the same as or similar to organisms found naturally in the human body and may be beneficial to health. Current researches have shown that the balance between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria is essential in order to maintain the oral health. Therefore, oral cavity has recently been suggested as a relevant target for probiotic applications. Dental caries can be seen as a microbial imbalance where the oral microbiota shift towards community dominance which produces acidogenic and acid-tolerant gram positive bacteria. Similarly, the accumulation of bacteria within the biofilm, facilitated by poor oral hygiene, predisposes …
Child mandibular giant cell granuloma: Case report
2016
Giant Cell Granuloma is a rare non-odontogenic lesion. Its name derives from the presence into the tumor of giant cells, similar to osteoclasts. On the basis of the biological behaviour, there are 2 variants of this tumor differentiated between aggressive and non-aggressive lesions. Treatment options reported in the literature include marginal or segmental osteotomy. If the lesion is classified as non-aggressive the marginal osteotomy (curettage) is the adequate treatment; in contrast, in presence of aggressive lesions, segmental osteotomy (en bloc resection) appears to yield the best overall outcome. The aim of the present report was to describe a case of primary Giant Cell Granuloma of th…

NEW GUIDED BONE REGENERATION PROCEDURE USING LEUKOCYTE AND PLATELET RICH FIBRIN (L PRF) IN ORAL SURGERY
2021
Non-transfusional hemocomponents are autogenous products used in several surgical fields obtained by the centrifugation of a blood sample from a patient and able to promote hard and soft tissue regeneration, local haemostasis, and the acceleration of wound healing. The aim of this PhD thesis was the validation of an innovative protocol for the Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) technique using second-generation autologous platelet concentrates, Leukocytes and Platelet-rich Fibrin (L-PRF), in post-extraction sockets of patients in need of dental avulsions and successive implant prosthetic rehabilitation, evaluating its ability to prevent alveolar bone resorption and promote bone regeneration. Th…
Perceptions of U = U Among Italian Infectious Diseases Specialists: A Nationwide Survey on Providers' Attitudes Toward the Risk of HIV Transmission i…
2022
This survey aimed to understand how far the Italian infectious diseases (ID) specialists are confident in the "Undetectable = Untransmittable" (U = U) message and translate this concept into clinical practice. An anonymous survey was distributed by e-mail to 286 clinicians to collect their opinions regarding six situations potentially at risk of HIV transmission between virologically suppressed patients and seronegative individuals who possibly require postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Overall, 51% of ID specialists deemed zero risk of HIV transmission through condomless sex for undetectable patients. This answer was more frequent among HIV specialists (30% vs. 21%, p = .01) and clinicians wo…
Human papillomaviruses in oral carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders: a systematic review.
2011
Human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral carcinoma (OSCC) and potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is controversial. The primary aim was to calculate pooled risk estimates for the association of HPV with OSCC and OPMD when compared with healthy oral mucosa as controls. We also examined the effects of sampling techniques on HPV detection rates. Methods: Systematic review was performed using PubMed (January 1966-September 2010) and EMBASE (January 1990-September 2010). Eligible studies included randomized controlled, cohort and cross-sectional studies. Pooled data were analysed by calculating odds ratios, using a random effects model. Risk of bias was based on characteristics of study group, appr…
