The association between burning mouth syndrome and sleep disturbance: A case-control multicentre study

Objectives: To investigate the quality of sleep and the psychological profiles of a large cohort of Italian patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and to clarify the relationships between these variables and pain. Methods: In this case–control study, 200 patients with BMS vs an equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy controls, recruited in 10 universities, were enrolled. The Effect of Intranasal Corticosteroids on Asthma Control and Quality of Life in Allergic Rhinitis with Mild Asthma

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms through which rhinitis affects asthma have not been completely elucidated. We explored whether the effect of nasal treatment on asthma control and respiratory-related quality of life (HRQoL) is mediated by inflammatory changes of the upper and lower airways. METHODS: Allergic rhinitics with mild asthma were randomized to a 14-day treatment period with either nasal budesonide 100 mug, 1 puff per nostril twice a day, or placebo. Clinical, functional, and biological evaluations were performed before and after treatment. Comparison between thrombotic risk scores in essential thrombocythemia and survival implications.

The conventional thrombotic risk stratification in essential thrombocythemia (ET) distinguishes patients in two risk groups based on previous thrombosis and age (< or >60). The IPSET-thrombosis takes into account four risk factors: age greater than 60 years and the presence of CV risk factors, thrombosis history and JAK2 V617F presence. The revised IPSET-thrombosis uses three adverse variables to delineate four risk categories: age greater than 60, thrombosis history, and JAK2 V617F presence. Arsenic trioxide-based therapy of relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia: registry results from the European LeukemiaNet

In 2008, a European registry of relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia was established by the European LeukemiaNet. Outcome data were available for 155 patients treated with arsenic trioxide in first relapse. In hematological relapse (n=104), 91% of the patients entered complete hematological remission (CR), 7% had induction death and 2% resistance, 27% developed differentiation syndrome and 39% leukocytosis, whereas no death or side effects occurred in patients treated in molecular relapse (n=40). We compared genomic breakpoints at the PML and RARA loci in 23 patients with therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia (t-APL) and 25 de novo APL cases.Eighteen of 23 t-APL cases received the topoisomerase II poison mitoxantrone for their primary disorder. DNA breaks were clustered in a previously reported 8 bp "hot spot" region of PML corresponding to a preferred site of mitoxantrone-induced DNA topoisomerase II-mediated cleavage in 39% of t-APL occurring in patients exposed to this agent and in none of the cases arising de novo (P = 0.007).
