The essay, starting from a little-known work of art, the reliquary of the skull of the Blessed Gerland kept at the Diocesan Museum of Caltagirone, deepens this figure of thirteenth century knight of the Order of St John who spent part of his life in Caltagirone, Sicily. The Blessed Gerland is one of the most popular early saints and heroes of the Order, who until now has been considered of Nordic origin, in particular Polish or German.

Il saggio ricostruisce le vicende della famiglia Torongi di Maiorca, che all’inizio del ‘500 si trasferì in Sicilia in fuga dal luogo di origine, dove a motivo dell’ascendenza giudeo-conversa era perseguitata dal locale tribunale inquisitoriale. A Palermo i Torongi si integrarono pienamente nel contesto politico, sociale ed economico locale, anche grazie alle relazioni parentali e clientelari strette con esponenti chiave dell’Ordine di Malta in Sicilia. In tal modo riuscirono a purificare il loro sangue converso e a cancellare il loro scomodo passato.

The Order of St. John always paid special attention to the publications documenting its military activities, in order to justify both its mission in defence of the faith and its requests to Christian princes for human and material resources. This editorial investment was particularly strong after the dramatic sieges of Rhodes (1480, 1522) and Malta (1565) by the Ottomans. Emerge un quadro di ricerche che, nonostante gli stimolanti temi di indagine e l’interesse delle fonti consultate, sono ancora caratterizzate da un approccio marcatamente settoriale. The purpose of this paper is to analyse tourism discourse - i.e. English as specialised and promotional discourse in the tourism field (Dann 1996, Gotti 2006, Maci, 2013) – as it is applied on websites promoting UNESCO sites in Sicily and in Malta. The consequent Tourism Destination Image (Crompton 1979; Echtner & Ritchie 1991) conveyed by the websites will also be investigated. In particular, these are some notes relating to the silver items in his possession. Alessio di Ferro was an illustrious exponent of one of the most prominent families in the centuries of the city of Trapani linked to the island of Malta.
