Management in China: Cultural, institutional roots and pragmatism. An inquiry in Shanghai

We base our work on interviews of Chinese managers living in and around Shanghai. We use the neo-institutional theoretical stream, which considers that a country’s economy is influenced by cultural and institutional phenomena. In a first part, we describe the theoretical background to the research and our method. Then, in a second part, we present the significant cultural and institutional features of China that enable us to justify several hypotheses about our topic. This paper makes a case for the “contractual-publicist” nature of the managers’ liability regime, although this matter lies within the scope of civil courts’ jurisdiction. Even though the law assigns civil courts the role in deciding disputes regarding potential infringement of public managers claims, these should be considered legitimate expectations (public law) and not rights (civil law). Except for the recovery of the executive jurisdiction of the administrative court, if the administration refuses to fulfil the civil judgment and the public manager spontaneously appeals for compliance, rather than (or together with) the civil one of forced execution.

Masculinity in flux? : Male managers navigating between work and family

2020

The article sheds light on male managers’ experience as fathers in a post-Soviet context in Lithuania. This empirical study of 12 male managers’ experiences of work-family integration (WFI), their ways of coping with negative experiences, and the role of organizations in reducing conflict and enriching WFI, reveal the emergence of a new paternal identity: fathers who perceive their role as caregivers but for whom this is still subordinate to the dominant role of the breadwinner. Relying on their wife is a man’s dominant coping strategy. Organizations are perceived as family unfriendly. The managerial implications of the need for organizational support are discussed. peerReviewed

Tiivistelmä – Abstract Suomen peruskoulujärjestelmä sai alkunsa vuonna 1970 ja samana vuonna julkaistiin ensimmäinen peruskoulun opetussuunnitelma. Seuraavat opetussuunnitelmauudistukset toteutettiin vuosina 1985, 1994 ja 2004. Parhaillaan Suomessa kehitetään uutta peruskoulun opetussuunnitelmaa, joka on tarkoitus ottaa käyttöön vuonna 2016. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin johtajuuden ja opetussuunnitelman välistä suhdetta.
