Invasive alien species in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas: the Egadi Islands (Italy) case study
2021
Invasive alien species (IAS) are one of the most severe threats to Mediterranean Sea biodiversity. Currently, the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in providing protection for marine biodiversity from IAS is still not fully understood. Here, we analysed eight Mediterranean MPAs located in a strategic geographic position within the Mediterranean basin. All the analysed MPAs were affected by the presence of IAS - evidence of the vulnerability of MPAs to biological invasion. Valuable habitats such as vermetid reef and coralligenous formations have become victim to numerous alien species. Alien species populations are likely to continue increasing in the Mediterranean Sea, so imple…
Tracking marine alien macroalgae in the mediterranean sea: The contribution of citizen science and remote sensing
2021
The accelerating rate of the introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) and the magnitude of shipping traffic make the Mediterranean Sea a hotspot of biological invasions. For the effective management of NIS, early detection and intensive monitoring over time and space are essential. Here, we present an overview of possible applications of citizen science and remote sensing in monitoring alien seaweeds in the Mediterranean Sea. Citizen science activities, involving the public (e.g., tourists, fishermen, divers) in the collection of data, have great potential for monitoring NIS. The innovative methodologies, based on remote sensing techniques coupled with in situ/laboratory advanced sampli…
Managing adult patients with infectious diseases in emergency departments: international ID-IRI study.
2021
We aimed to explore factors for optimizing antimicrobial treatment in emergency departments. A single-day point prevalence survey was conducted on January 18, 2020, in 53 referral/tertiary hospitals in 22 countries. 1957 (17%) of 11557 patients presenting to EDs had infections. The mean qSOFA score was 0.37 +/- 0.74. Sepsis (qSOFA >= 2) was recorded in 218 (11.1%) patients. The mean qSOFA score was significantly higher in low-middle (1.48 +/- 0.963) compared to upper-middle (0.17 +/- 0.482) and high-income (0.36 +/- 0.714) countries ( P < 0.001). Eight (3.7%) patients with sepsis were treated as outpatients. The most common diagnoses were upper-respiratory (n = 877, 43.3%), lower-respirator…
O-195 The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on psychological distress due to the cancellation of ART. A systematic review and meta-analysis
2021
Abstract Study question Is there evidence that infertile patients have been more likely to experience distress during the COVID-19 outbreak with the consequent interruption of treatment plans? Summary answer High levels of psychological distress among infertile patients have been found during the COVID-19 pandemic, greater than that reported in the general population. What is known already Preliminary research on the negative consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak on mental health evidenced heightened levels of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress in some clinical populations as well as in community samples. However, little is known about the impact of COVID-19 on psychological dist…
Innovative methods on managing of resources in banks, caused by the influences of the current crisis on the working process of these institutions
2012
Current actions in the economic circles were significantly caused by the work of the banks, but they also affect significantly the work of the banks. Therefore, the focus of this paper is on perception the novelties which should be applied in the approach of the work of the bank institutions, with a main goal to show the changes in the methods of the organization’s work (financial). The working methods are comparative analysis and perception of the statistic results. The conclusion shows that the securitization, defending some positions which are considered as classic in the economy, hedging should be continuously and actively managed, and never should surface passiveness and leaving things…

Risk of Persistent Disability in Patients With Pediatric-Onset Multiple Sclerosis
2021
Importance Availability of new disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) and changes of therapeutic paradigms have led to a general improvement of multiple sclerosis (MS) prognosis in adults. It is still unclear whether this improvement also involves patients with pediatric-onset MS (POMS), whose early management is more challenging. Objective To evaluate changes in the prognosis of POMS over time in association with changes in therapeutic and managing standards. Design, Setting, and Participants Retrospective, multicenter, observational study. Data were extracted and collected in May 2019 from the Italian MS Registry, a digital database including more than 59 000 patients. Inclusion criteria were…
Il reclamo preventivo per accedere al processo tributario. Analisi comparata con alcuni modelli europei e sud-americani
2018
The Mandatory Administrative Complaint-Mediation Filter, introduced by the Italian legislator in art. 17 bis of Legislative Decree 546/92, finds precedents not only in Europe, between western civil law countries closer to the Italian legal tradition but also in other continents. Among the out-of-court settlements systems for managing disputes adopted in other European jurisdictions, it shall pay attention on those applied in France, Germany and Spain. In all three countries there is a compulsory administrative phase before taking a legal action, applicable to the generality of tax disputes, irrespective of the value of the dispute. Among the precedents in other continents, attention will be…
Organizational downsizing – an ethical versus managerial viewpoint
1999
Since the 1980s downsizing has become popular in western companies. It is a pervasive and understudied phenomenon. Downsizing means a big change in the firm’s situation. Managing change has been much researched, but often only during a growth period. So, the question of management and leadership of downsizing is a relevant and an independent research issue. This article considers the experiences of four case‐ managers who have participated in managing staff reductions in big Finnish firms. As managing downsizing can be ethically demanding, even a problematic challenge for a manager, the managers’ experiences are described and interpreted from the ethical viewpoint. The study is designed to …
Management of chronic musculoskeletal pain in veterans: a systematic review
2021
Background and aim of the work. Veterans are military with health problems due to military conditions. The improved body armor and operational conditions has reduced the number of deaths, but increased the number of veterans with severe injuries, affected by musculoskeletal pain and associated syndromes, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Multimodal approaches are considered in USA the gold standard for the treatment of these problems, while in Europe and Italy the data are unknown. The aim of this review was to describe and summarize multimodal therapeutic approaches that apply to the veteran population for chronic musculoskeletal pain and relate syndromes management. Methods. A compr…
