In Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) the suspected etiological cause is a dysregulation of the intestinal immune system, in which it is possible to determine a cross-like immune reactivity against the resident microbiota; this mechanism explains the exsistence of Lesnioski-Chron's disease, a variant of IBD in which patients manifest osteoarticular problems that may also be the primary manifestation of the disease. The aim of this study was to compare some cases encountered by our research group at the University of Palermo with others reported in international literature on osteoarticular manifestations in IDB.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic and recurrent inflammatory diseases. Although the typical symptoms are localized in the gastrointestinal tract, there are also extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) associated with IBD, probably caused by immune reactions secondary to the pathology of origin. Anybody can be affected by EIMs, which can be dermatological, pulmonary, ocular, musculoskeletal, hepatobiliary and neurological, et al. This represents a therapeutic challenge for clinicians, who must first establish a diagnostic and then a multidisciplinary therapeutic path, in order to guarantee an optimal quality of life for the patient.

Background The Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder, characterised by multiple congenital malformations, dysmorphic facial features and mental retardation. The Aegean area, like other regions of intense geodynamic activity, is characterised by extensive geogenic degassing. Gas manifestations widespread on land are also very frequent underwater. The present study aims at producing a first catalogue of these manifestations together with the geochemical characterization of the emitted gases. Sixty-one samples at 21 different sites have been collected by diving up to 15 m depth, mainly along the south Aegean active volcanic arc (SAAVA). The sites displayed very different gas fluxes.
