Le absidi nelle prime chiese normanne e nella Cappella Palatina di Palermo

Nei primi decenni del XII secolo si realizzano in Sicilia numerosi edifici religiosi, le cui absidi seguono in genere i modelli bizantini, ma non mancano soluzioni originali. Tra le chiese basiliane del Val Demone si distingue quella dei Santi Pietro e Paolo a Casalvecchio Siculo (1117-1172), la cui abside centrale assume esternamente la forma di una torretta a pianta rettangolare, che include due nicchie pentagonali negli spazi di raccordo con la curva interna. Tutte e tre le absidi della chiesa di Sant’Andrea a Piazza Armerina (ante 1148) presentano esternamente un profilo rettilineo e la massiccia struttura muraria ingloba la torre campanaria. The use of a novel monoclonal antibody (mAb) that reacts with (1,6)-beta-glucan has permitted the study of the different covalent linkages between glucan and mannoproteins in the cell wall of Candida albicans. The mAb JRR1 was originally raised by immunization with Zymolyase extracts from C. albicans cell walls, but it soon became apparent that it reacted with a (1,6)-beta-glucan epitope. By using this antibody, we show the existence of glucan-mannoprotein complexes between the (1,6)-beta-glucan epitope recognized by the antibody and cell wall mannoproteins. The topology of the (1,6)-beta-glucan in the cell wall of C. albicans has also been studied.

Characterization of aSchizosaccharomyces pombemorphological mutant altered in the galactomannan content

In a search for Schizosaccharomyces pombe mutants resistant to the antifungal agent papulacandin B, a morphological mutant was isolated. The mutant is round shaped in contrast to the rod shaped parental strain. This morphological defect segregated as a recessive Mendelian character and was not observed in other papulacandin B resistant mutants belonging to the same complementation group. The mutation mapped in the right arm of S. pombe chromosome III very close to pap1 marker. Mutant cell walls were more susceptible to alkali extraction and Novozyme degradation than those from the wild-type. Wall mannoproteins of the yeast and mycelial cells of Candida albicans: nature of the glycosidic bonds and polydispersity of their mannan moieties.

SUMMARY: Zymolyase released between 20 and 25% of the total protein from purified walls of yeast (Y) and mycelial (M) cells of Candida albicans. The material released contained 92% carbohydrate (86% mannose and 6% glucose) and 7:< protein. Over 85% of the carbohydrate was N-glycosidically linked to the protein and the rest (less than 15%) was linked O-glycosidically. Highly polydisperse, high molecular mass mannoproteins, resolved by electrophoresis as four defined bands in Y cells and two bands in M cells, had both types of sugar chains. Killer Toxins of Yeasts: Inhibitors of Fermentation and Their Adsorption.

The killer toxin (KT 28), a glycoprotein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 28, was almost completely adsorbed by bentonite, when applied at a concentration of 1 g per liter. No significant differences were found between several types of bentonite. Killer toxin KT 28 is similarly adsorbed by intact yeast cells or by a commercial preparation of yeast cell walls that has been recommended to prevent stuck fermentations. An investigation of the cell wall fractions revealed that the toxin KT 28 was mainly adsorbed by mannan, that removed the toxin completely.
