EXPERIMENTAL SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF MONUMENTS FOR RISK MITIGATION

2008

An experimental investigation, at the moment in progress, for the evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of a monumental structure and the effects of some reinforcement devices are presented. Referring to this monumental structure, that is a church, the authors obtained the dynamically identified analytical model and recognized that the drum-dome system was one of the macro-elements with highest risk. This result was obtained by analyzing the linear behaviour. In order to study the nonlinear behaviour, tests on reduced scale models were necessary. The models, with and without risk mitigation reinforcements, were subjected to seismic input with rising intensity in order to know the effects …

EFFECTIVENESS OF BASALT FIBRE-REINFORCED CEMENTITIOUS SYSTEMS IN CONFINING MASONRY MEMBERS: AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION

2020

The use of composites based on fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) to strengthen masonry columns has become a common practice in the last decades. FRPs, however, exhibit some shortcomings when applied to masonry substrates, due to the organic nature of their matrix. For this reason, increasing attention is paid today to composites based on fibre-reinforced cementitious matrices (FRCMs), in which the polymeric matrix is replaced with an inorganic matrix (such as cementitious mortars). Cementitious matrices guarantee higher breathability and compatibility with the substrate, less sensitivity to debonding at the interfaces, and higher resistance to fire and high temperatures. Moreover, due to the…

On the Fundamental Period of Infilled RC Buildings

2015

This paper investigates the fundamental period of vibration of RC buildings by means of finite element macro-modelling and modal eigenvalue analysis. As a base study, a number of 14-storey RC buildings have been considered \"according to code designed\" and \"according to code non-designed\". Several parameters have been studied including the number of spans; the span length in the direction of motion; the stiffness of the infills; the percentage openings of the infills and; the location of the soft storeys. The computed values of the fundamental period are compared against those obtained from seismic code and equations proposed by various researchers in the literature. From the analysis of…

Mixed Stone-timber Masonry in Traditional Construction: Structural, Architectural and Anti-seismic Features across Europe

2018

This paper investigates the stone masonry with timber reinforcement through the European traditional and historical architecture. It is a remarkable practice consisting of combining different materials to build up a masonry. This technology shows a wide variety of typological, formal, and technological types of buildings across Europe as it is strongly influenced by the nature and availability of local materials, the cultural aspects of the various communities, and the soils geological nature. As a consequence, the same constructive typology is based on different premises and leads to many interesting results. In this paper the various uses of such a mixed stone-timber masonry are shown in …

The use of pumice lightweight concrete for masonry applications

2011

In the last two decades, the use of pumice as lightweight aggregate for concrete in structural applications has been the object of different studies. The aim was to find out if pumice can be an alternative to ordinary lightweight aggregate. The present paper is framed in this context. Here, a study is presented showing the use of pumice for making lightweight concrete units for masonry members. Through the paper, the formulation of a mix design for lightweight concrete is proposed. Then the obtained mechanical characteristics of the masonry units are discussed and compared to the code requirements. Reinforced bearing masonry walls, made with the concrete masonry units in question, were made…

La porte Peyrine à Châteauponsac (Haute-Vienne) : une possible fortification de l’Antiquité tardive inédite ?

2019

1° In Limousin, our knowledge of ancient monumentalfuneral architecture has been given a new impetus forresearch during the past fifteen years thanks to the inventoryof large-stone blocks reused in civil and religious constructionsor even in later funeral arrangements.2° It is from this standpoint that the Châteauponsac sitehas been included where, in an urban landscape, a largeconcentration of examples of ancient architecture areconserved. Among the major facilities preserving in theirelevations a large number of these re-used stones is includedthe ancient Saint-Thyrse abbey church and the Porte Peyrine ,which unlike the neighbouring religious building, has so farbeen the subject of no spe…

Rocking behaviour of multi-block columns subjected to pulse-typeground motion accelerations

2016

Ancient columns, made with a variety of materials such as marble, granite, stone or masonry are an important part of theEuropean cultural heritage. In particular columns of ancient temples in Greece and Sicily which support only the architrave arecharacterized by small axial load values. This feature together with the slenderness typical of these structural members clearlyhighlights as the evaluation of the rocking behaviour is a key aspect of their safety assessment and maintenance. It has to be notedthat the rocking response of rectangular cross-sectional columns modelled as monolithic rigid elements, has been widely investigatedsince the first theoretical study carried out by Housner (19…

Interventi migliorativi in acciaio a tutela delle opere di interesse storico-monumentale dal rischio sismico

2007

The research concerns the analysis of structural behaviour of some historic-monumental buildings in which steel structures are used for the seismic protection. A dynamic model has been made to individuate the macro-element with an high seismic risk, that is, for church studied, the drum-dome system. Then a scaled model has been tested to determinate the evolution of the lesions, the retrofitting works, that are constituted by steel frames, bare or braced, inserted inside door/window holes of the drum-dome system, and the variation structural ductility. An elastic linear analysis, with a FEM software, has been developed for other type of buildings, in which the vertical structures are made w…

Monitoring of stress distribution in damaged small-scale masonry walls by using two innovative sensors

2023

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) represents a strategic solution for the preservation of cultural heritage buildings. Existing masonry structures often suffer reductions in mechanical performances due to physiological aging of material constituents, external actions, and effect of catastrophic natural events. In many cases, the prompt prediction of damage in masonry elements is difficult and it can cause sudden collapses, compromising the safety of people. The proposed experimental study examines the effectiveness of two low-cost and innovative stress sensors, i.e. piezoelectric and capacitive stress sensors, for SHM of masonry structures. To this scope, the sensors were embedded in the m…
