Citizen Engagement and Entrepreneurship: Implications for Sustainable Tourism Development

2018

Research has not investigated the use of competitions-hackathons as a citizen engagement tool to motivate and activate citizen's engagement in entrepreneurship driving sustainable tourism development. This paper fills in this gap by using the SHARE Challenge as a case study. SHARE is a competition-based crowdsourcing project launched by the Government of South Australia aiming to engage citizens in sharing economy entrepreneurial ventures. The competition received 88 eligible ideas from different stakeholders, and the study conducted a content analyses of these ideas for investigating the profile of the citizens and the type of the sharing economy ideas that were inspired by the SHARE. Latency-Oblivious Distributed Task Scheduling for Mobile Edge Computing

2018

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is emerging as one of the effective platforms for offloading the resource- and latency-constrained computational services of modern mobile applications. For latency- and resource-constrained mobile devices, the important issues include: 1) minimize end-to-end service latency; 2) minimize service completion time; 3) high quality-of-service (QoS) requirement to offload the complex computational services. To address the above issues, a latencyoblivious distributed task scheduling scheme is designed in this work to maximize the QoS performance and goodput for the MEC services. Unlike most of the existing works, we consider the latency-oblivious property of different …

iPro user : a case study of pro-am photographers in Malaysia travel magazine

2012

In the digital era, centralized media is moving towards de-centralized and globalized network. This development changes the relationship between mass media and their audiences, remodels the connection among media users and expands traditional roles of consumers. Consumer behavior changes blur the distinction between producer-consumer, professional-amateur, and work-leisure. With a title of ‘iPro User’ which refers to ‘I am a productive and professional user’, this paper is applying ‘pro-am’ model with a framework of ‘prosumer’ to investigate why and how a group of professional amateurs are networked together and utilize digital devices to participate as content contributors. This prosumptio…

One More, One More... You Get Stuck" : The Role of Craving in Smartphone-Related Technostress

2022

Smartphones have been integrated into nearly every aspect of human life. Because of them, being entertained, communicating with others, and finding information has never been easier. Even though such possibilities are positive on the surface, the versatile nature of smartphones has also created issues, such as people using them compulsively or excessively. By collecting and analyzing data from 30 semistructured interviews, we explored how users may experience craving unstoppable/uncontrollable desire to use, despite the negative consequences) that make them use smartphones compulsively or excessively. Such use may eventually lead to technostress, which is stress caused by technology use. We…

Towards a sociology of the mobile phone

2005

Use of the mobile phone is an immensely significant social and cultural phenomenon. However, market hype and utopian dreams greatly exaggerate its importance. The fundamental issue for sociology is the process of change. Bound up with contemporary issues of change, the mobile phone is a prime object for sociological attention both at the macro and micro levels of analysis. This article considers the strengths and weaknesses of four methods for studying the sociality of the mobile phone (social demography; political economy; conversation, discourse and text analysis; and ethnography), the different kinds of knowledge they produce, and the interests they represent. Recent ethnographic researc…
