The Use of Mobile Payment Systems in Post-COVID-19 Economic Recovery : Primary Research on an Emerging Market for Experience Goods

2021

This study investigated whether mobile payment services could drive post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery in the ‘experience goods’ sector (e.g., tourism) utilising Bandura’s self-efficacy or social cognitive theory. It explored the factors influencing the intention to continue using mobile payment services and the intention to recommend these to others. An empirical survey was conducted to assess the study variables, and the data obtained therefrom were analysed using the industry-standard Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining method. The study results suggest that personal innovativeness and perceived trust influence consumers’ intention to continue using mobil…

Mobile money and the impact of mobile phone regulatory enforcement among the urban poor in Tanzania

2021

Mobile money provides a tool for survival, particularly in urban conditions shaped by city regulations that make microvending difficult for the poor. An analysis of 165 interviews conducted in two low-income neighborhoods in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania over 8 years demonstrates how interlocked layers of technology and interaction make mobile money services semiformal. I introduce two mobile money-enabled survival strategies: intrahousehold transfers for day-to-day survival (transfers within the same city) and resource safeguarding through kin remittances of start-up capital (home-based subsistence business capital stored for kin access in emergencies). The recent tightening of mobile phone regu…

An Empirical Examination of the Economics of Mobile Application Security

2021

The growth of mobile devices coupled with the advances in mobile technologies has resulted in the development and widespread use of a variety of mobile applications (apps). Mobile apps have been developed for social networking, banking, receiving daily news, maintaining fitness, and for job-related tasks. The security of the apps is an important concern. However, in some cases, the app developers may be less interested to invest in the security of the apps, if users are unwilling to pay for the added security. In this paper, we empirically examine whether consumers are less willing to pay for security features than for usability features. In addition, we examine whether a third-party certif…

Personal correlates of problematic types of social media and mobile phone use in emerging adults

2019

We investigated the occurrence of selected types of problematic social media and mobile phone use in emerging adults, specifically social media and mobile phone overuse, phubbing, creeping, and catfishing. Contemporaneous relations with age, gender, and Big Five personality traits were examined. The participants comprised 459 Slovenian emerging adults, aged 18 to 29 years (68% female). The results suggest that problematic behaviors associated with social media and mobile phone use, with the exception of catfishing, are relatively common among young people. The examined behaviors were negatively related to age, and overuse of mobile phones, social media, and creeping were more prevalent in f…

Mobile phone use before and during the COVID-19 pandemic : a panel study of older adults in seven countries

2023

The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in older adults’ mobile phone use from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic. The media displacement and digital divide approaches served as the theoretical frameworks of the study. The data were drawn from the 2018 and 2020 waves of the Aging + Communication + Technology cross-national longitudinal panel study. The sample consisted of older Internet users, aged 62 to 96 (in 2018), from Austria, Canada, Finland, Israel, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, who participated in both waves (N = 4,398). Latent class analysis and latent transition analysis with multinomial regression models were the main methods applied to the data. With rega…

Factors Affecting Digital Tool Use in Client Interaction According to Mental Health Professionals : Interview Study

2023

Background: Digital tools and interventions are being increasingly developed in response to the growing mental health crisis, and mental health professionals (MHPs) considerably influence their adoption in client practice. However, how MHPs use digital tools in client interaction is yet to be sufficiently understood, which poses challenges to their design, development, and implementation. Objective: This study aimed to create a contextual understanding of how MHPs use different digital tools in clinical client practice and what characterizes the use across tools. Methods: A total of 19 Finnish MHPs participated in semistructured interviews, and the data were transcribed, coded, and inductiv…

Cultural impact on international branding : a case of marketing Finnish mobile phones in China

2001

Hundreds of Finnish brands have been launched in China. How do the Chinese perceive these brands and think about the brand names in Chinese? Will the Chinese associate the images with Finland? And what is Finland in Chinese eyes? … In short, how to manage a brand in China? Finnish corporations usually practice three types of branding approaches. The first one is to keep every elements of the brand exactly the same as it in European market and only to substitute the original text with Chinese characters. Only a few companies apply this approach because people are more aware of the impact of cultural differences. Slogans, for example, may not have the same persuasive power and effectiveness i…
