Properties of solutions for nonlinear Volterra integral equations

Some properties of non-locally bounded solutions for Abel integral equations are given. The case in which there exists two non-trivial solutions for such equations is also studied. Besides, some known results about existence, uniqueness and attractiveness of solutions for some Volterra equations are improved.

Piagetian and Neo-Piagetian variables in science problem solving: directions for practice

Este artigo apresenta uma visão global da investigação sobre variáveis piagetianas e neopiagetianas implicadas na solução de problemas, focando, ainda, como estas va riáveis afetam a performance dos envolvidos na solução daqueles. Algumas das variáveis discutidas dizem respeito à habilidade formal de operacionalização: habilidade de razoamento formal, M-espaço, fator campo (dependência/independência de campo), estilo cognitivo móbil/fixo, capacidade da memória de trabalho e colaboração nas tarefas de resolução de problemas. A partir da discussão efetuada, são sugeridas algumas recomendações para a melhora da instrução na resolução de problemas.

With his book The Nature of Mathematical Knowledge, Ph. Kitcher, who had been doing extensive research in the history of the subject and in the contemporary debates on epistemology, saw clearly the need for a change in philosophy of mathematics. His goal was to replace the dominant, apriorist philosophy of mathematics with an empiricist philosophy. The current philosophies of mathematics all appeared, according to his analysis, not to fit well with how mathematicians actually do mathematics. En estas últimas décadas la gestión de las actividades relacionadas con el deporte ha tomado un papel relevante para las instituciones deportivas. La matemática borrosa, aporta un conjunto de algoritmos que permiten establecer la idoneidad del deportista, el cual ha de reunir ciertas cualidades que lo hagan adecuado para la posición o posiciones que debe ocupar en un determinado equipo. Bajo estos preceptos, hay que resaltar que la Teoría de Conjuntos Borrosos no es un segmento de la Matemática emergente en nuestros días si no que, tiene sus inicios en la década de los años 20, siendo en la de los 50, donde sentó sus bases.

A level set method with Sobolev Gradient and Haralick Edge Detection

Variational level set methods, which have been proposed with various energy functionals, mostly use the ordinary L type gradient in gradient descent algorithm to minimize the energy functional. The gradient flow is influenced by both the energy to be minimized and the norms, which are induced from inner products, used to measure the cost of perturbation of the curve. However, there are many undesired properties related to the gradient flows due to the 2 L type inner products. For example, there is not any regularity term in the definition of this inner product that causes non-smooth flows and inaccurate results.
