Adversarial reverse mapping of equilibrated condensed-phase molecular structures
2020
A tight and consistent link between resolutions is crucial to further expand the impact of multiscale modeling for complex materials. We herein tackle the generation of condensed molecular structures as a refinement -- backmapping -- of a coarse-grained structure. Traditional schemes start from a rough coarse-to-fine mapping and perform further energy minimization and molecular dynamics simulations to equilibrate the system. In this study we introduce DeepBackmap: A deep neural network based approach to directly predict equilibrated molecular structures for condensed-phase systems. We use generative adversarial networks to learn the Boltzmann distribution from training data and realize reve…
Control Structures in Motivational Psychology
1996
Abstract Motivational processes in psychology have been interpreted from many different viewpoints. In the general case, they present an information feedback structure, with goals and disturbances, in a similar way most control systems behave. In this contribution, this similarity is analysed and examples of motivational processes corresponding to the most common control system structures are given. This comparison will be fruitful from both sides: to explore a new field of control theory application and to provide a new framework to the analysis of these complex processes.
1. Recognition And Social Ontology: An Introduction
2011
One of Hegel's big ideas is that creatures with a self-conception are the subjects of developmental processes that exhibit a distinctive structure. Call a creature 'essentially self-conscious' if what it is for itself, its self- conception, is an essential element of what it is in itself. How something that is essentially self-conscious appears to itself is part of what it really is. This chapter shows how the tripartite account of erotic awareness can be used in a natural way to build a notion of recognition that satisfies these twin philosophical constraints on the interpretation of Hegel's notion of self-consciousness in terms of recognition. Doing so it clarifies the nature of the trans…
David Marr: A Theory for Cerebral Neocortex
1986
This paper is an important contribution to the understanding of the visual system, it contains a part of those ideas which have become the commonly accepted basis of current research. Although some of these principles already had a history in 1970, Marr clearly deserves the credit for their sharp formulation and for a series of attempts leading to a formalization of the problems. His way of dividing the approach into the levels of computational theory, of the algorithm and of the implementation clarified the problems. His creed that human visual processing is modular, and that different types of information, which are encoded in the image can be decoded independently by modules, has been ge…
On the decision problem for the guarded fragment with transitivity
2002
The guarded fragment with transitive guards, [GF+TG], is an extension of GF in which certain relations are required to be transitive, transitive predicate letters appear only in guards of the quantifiers and the equality symbol may appear everywhere. We prove that the decision problem for [GF+TG] is decidable. This answers the question posed in (Ganzinger et al., 1999). Moreover, we show that the problem is 2EXPTIME-complete. This result is optimal since the satisfiability problem for GF is 2EXPTIME-complete (Gradel, 1999). We also show that the satisfiability problem for two-variable [GF+TG] is NEXPTIME-hard in contrast to GF with bounded number of variables for which the satisfiability pr…
On the Finite Satisfiability Problem for the Guarded Fragment with Transitivity
2005
We study the finite satisfiability problem for the guarded fragment with transitivity. We prove that in case of one transitive predicate the problem is decidable and its complexity is the same as the general satisfiability problem, i.e. 2Exptime-complete. We also show that finite models for sentences of GF with more transitive predicate letters used only in guards have essentially different properties than infinite ones.

The article aims to answer two questions: how the language instruction framework was inscribed into the 2017/2018 Polish language curriculum and what image of the linguistic and communicative competence results from this document. The research method is based on the assumption that these two questions can be answered by analysing the cognitive operators used in the description of specific requirements. The article analyses the operators found in the ‘language instruction’ section of the curriculum. Within the linguistic and communicative competence, the document distinguishes among metalinguistic, analytical, linguistic (including normative and grammar-lexical competences) and communicative…
Evaluation of Structural and Temporal Properties of Ego Networks for Data Availability in DOSNs
2017
The large diffusion of Online Social Networks (OSNs) has influenced the way people interact with each other. OSNs present several drawbacks, one of the most important is the problem of privacy disclosures. Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have been proposed as a valid alternative solution to solve this problem. DOSNs are Online Social Networks implemented on a distributed platform, such as a P2P system or a mobile network. However, the decentralization of the control presents several challenges, one of the main ones is guaranteeing data availability without relying on a central server. To this aim, users’ data allocation strategies have to be defined and this requires the knowledg…
Of Many, Many Other Things
2021
Propositions of everyday discourse can have, unlike those of formal languages, other components over and above the predicate and the terms needed to saturate it. These components are of two very different sorts: adverbs and further individual terms. Only adverbs have already been discussed by other writers in this connection; but they are not the whole story.
A Musical Pattern Discovery System Founded on a Modeling of Listening Strategies
2004
Music is a domain of expression that conveys a paramount degree of complexity. The musical surface, composed of a multitude of notes, results from the elaboration of numerous structures of different types and sizes. The composer constructs this structural complexity in a more or less explicit way. The listener, faced by such a complex phenomenon, is able to reconstruct only a limited part of it, mostly in a non-explicit way. One particular aim of music analysis is to objectify such complexity, thus offering to the listener a tool for enriching the appreciation of music (Lartillot and SaintJames, 2004). The trouble is, traditional musical analysis, although offering a valuable understanding …
