The reactions of dimethylsulfide (DMS) with molecular iodine (I(2)) and iodine monochloride (ICl) have been studied by infrared matrix isolation spectroscopy by co-condensation of the reagents in an inert gas matrix. Molecular adducts of DMS + I(2) and DMS + ICl have also been prepared using standard synthetic methods. The vapour above each of these adducts trapped in an inert gas matrix gave the same infrared spectrum as that recorded for the corresponding co-condensation reaction. In this article we give an overview of the matrix isolation technique combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection for embedded atomic impurities in solid rare gases. A special emphasis is put on impurity – matrix coupling effects combining both experimental and theoretical approaches.

Abstract The FCNS ⇆ FC(NS) photoisomerization process is a simple model system for molecular switches. Here, we examined the switching processes by experimental and theoretical methods. Prior matrix-isolation IR spectroscopic studies were complemented by matrix-isolation UV spectroscopic measurements to assist the interpretation of the mechanism of the ring closure and opening processes and to verify the accuracy of the computations on the vertical excitation energies. With the increase in complexity of functional polymers in recent years, MALDI-ToF has become an important tool for gaining precise information on polymer functionality, end groups, and, in special cases, molecular weights. Here we describe how pencil lead, deposited by simply drawing with a regular pencil onto conventional MALDI-ToF targets, can be used as a very attractive matrix for MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry of synthetic polymers. Highly sensitive polymers such as silyl hydride functional poly(styrene), poly(butadiene), and poly(isoprene) have been investigated using conventional MALDI-ToF matrices as well as pencil lead. FTIR spectroscopy was combined with the matrix isolation technique and quantum chemical calculations with the aim of studying complexes of isocyanic acid with sulfur dioxide. The structures of the HNCO⋯SO2 complexes of 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 stoichiometry were optimized at the MP2, B3LYPD3, B2PLYPD3 levels of theory with the 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set. Five stable 1:1 HNCO⋯SO2 complexes were found. Three of them contain a weak N-H⋯O hydrogen bond, whereas two other structures are stabilized by van der Waals interactions. Vibrational spectroscopy of trans and cis deuterated formic acid (HCOOD): Anharmonic calculations and experiments in argon and neon matrices

The absorption spectra of trans and cis conformers of deuterated formic acid (HCOOD) isolated in argon and neon matrices are analyzed in the mid-infrared and near-infrared spectral regions (7900–450 cm � 1 ). Vibrational excitation by narrow-band IR radiation is used to convert the lower-energy trans conformer to the higher-energy cis form. A large number of overtone and combination bands are identified. The results of anharmonic vibrational calculations (CC-VSCF) for both conformers are reported and compared to the experimental spectra.
MALDI-TOF characterization of macromonomers

Methacryloyl endfunctionalized oligostyrene macromonomers were characterized by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight (MALDI-TOF) spectroscopy and by isocratic and gradient high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The molar mass distribution derived by the different techniques coincide for the investigated oligomers. Mixing experiments revealed that the MALDI-TOF peak areas do not necessarily represent the mixing ratio of the components. Combination of gradient HPLC and MALDI-TOF has resolved the chemical composition of the coupling products formed by reaction of the living anion with oxygen.
Matrix isolation and quantum chemical studies on the H2O2–SO2complex

Complexation and photochemical reactions of hydrogen peroxide and sulfur dioxide have been studied in solid Ar, Kr and Xe. Complexes between H2O2 and SO2 are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. In solid Ar, the H2O2–SO2 complex absorptions are found at wavenumbers of 3572.8, 3518.7, 3511.2, 3504.3, 1340.3, 1280.2 and 1149.9 cm−1. In Kr and Xe matrices, the bonded OH stretching frequencies deviate from the values in Ar, and we propose that the matrix surrounding influences the structure of the H2O2–SO2 complex.
