Novel Digital Measurement Technique to Analyze the Palatine Suture Expansion after Palatine Rapid Maxillary Expansion Technique

2021

The aim of the study was to validate a novel digital measurement method to quantify the volume of the midpalatal suture after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Material and methods: Eight patients with maxillary skeletal transverse deficiency were submitted to palatine suture expansion using the McNamara orthodontic appliance during a period of nine months. After 30 days of treatment, all patients were exposed postoperatively to a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Afterwards, the scans were uploaded into the three-dimensional orthodontic-planning software to allow the volumetric assessment of the palatine suture expansion through palatine rapid maxillary expansion using a McNamara a…

Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Neonates and Children Undergoing Dental, Maxillo-Facial or Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Surgery: A RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Me…

2022

Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a potential complication in surgical procedures, mainly because clean/contaminated surgery involves organs that are normally colonized by bacteria. Dental, maxillo-facial and ear-nose-throat (ENT) surgeries are among those that carry a risk of SSIs because the mouth and the first respiratory tracts are normally colonized by a bacterial flora. The aim of this consensus document was to provide clinicians with recommendations on surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis in neonates (<28 days of chronological age) and pediatric patients (within the age range of 29 days–18 years) undergoing dental, maxillo-facial or ENT surgical procedures. These included: (…

Periapical Microsurgery with an Endoscope and Microscope of Two Upper Central Incisors Already Subjected to Periapical Surgery 25 Years Ago

2020

Introduction. The present clinical case describes periapical microsurgery with an endoscope and microscope in a patient already treated 25 years ago due to persistent periapical disease of the two central upper incisors, restored with poorly adapted crowns. Clinical Case. The first periapical surgery had been performed with silver amalgam as a retrograde filler material, causing grayish staining of the buccal mucosa. Periapical surgery was performed raising a submarginal flap with ostectomy and apicoectomy, retrograde cavity preparation with ultrasound tips, and filling with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). After soft tissue healing and complete bone regeneration of the lesion, retreatment…

Effect of different mixing and placement methods on the quality of MTA apical plug in simulated apexification model

2017

Background It is necessary apical plug material to exhibit proper adaptation with the root canal walls. Presence of voids at the interface between the root canal wall and this material result in micro leakage, which might have a relationship with post treatment disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different mixing (manual and ultrasonic) and placement (manual and manual in association with indirect ultrasonic) method of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) on the void count and dimension in the apical plug in natural teeth with simulated open apices. Material and methods Eighty human maxillary central incisors were selected. After simulation of the open apex model…

Green discoloration of the crown after internal root resorption treatment with grey mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)

2011

Root resorption (RR) is the loss of dental hard tissues as a result of clastic activities. Internal inflammatory root resorption (IRR) is a type of RR characterized by progressive loss of tooth substance starting from the root canal wall. IRR is usually asymptomatic, slowly progressing, and detectable upon routine radiographic examination or by the clinical sign of a ‘pink spot’ when the IRR involves the crown or the coronal third of the root canal. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a biocompatible cement that has been used successfully in pulp capping, pulpotomy, treatment of traumatized teeth with immature apices, and for treatment of root resorption. The treatment and follow-up of a ma…

The implant-supported milled bar overdenture : a literature review

2008

Purpose: This bibliographical review aims to determine the present situation of the implant-supported milled bar overdenture as a therapeutic option in implantology, as well as to set and compare the techniques and materials currently used for making them. Materials and methods: By searching the main electronic bibliographical data in indexed Medline articles, we obtained a total number of 20 articles that fulfilled the requirements of this bibliographical review. Results: The implant-supported milled bar overdenture offers excellent long-term successful results, although complication rates are higher in emergency cases of patients initially planned for a fixed prosthesis. Wilson maxillary curve analyzed by cbct a study on normocclusion and malocclusion individuals

2013

The anatomy of dental compensation curve in the frontal plane described by George H. Wilson is one of the occlusal determinants of orthodontic treatment. However, there is few published comparing malocclusion and normocclusion individuals. Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the curve of Wilson at first and second maxillary molars, normocclusion pattern and malocclusion pattern, with and without bilateral posterior crossbite, using angular references in CBCT studies. Material and Methods: We analyzed 10 cases of malocclusion with bilateral posterior crossbite, 10 cases of malocclusion without bilateral posterior crossbite and 10 cases with non orthodontic normocclusion (patients…

Incidence of impacted and supernumerary teeth-a radiographic study in a North Greek population.

2010

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of impacted and supernumerary teeth, apart from third molars. Study design: This was a retrospective study of 1.239 panoramic radiographs taken of patients who presented to the Department of Dentoalveolar Surgery, Implantology and Radiology at the School of Dentistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece between 1991 and 1999. The panoramic radiographs and dental records were reviewed in order to determine whether there were impacted or supernumerary teeth. Observations were also made on the space in dentition, corresponding to the position of each impacted tooth, the lack of space for tooth eruption, t…

Frequency and characteristics of tooth agenesis among an orthodontic patient population

2009

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of tooth agenesis and the associated skeletal morphology and arch widths in a group of Turkish patients seeking orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods: We designed a retrospective study composed of pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalometric films of 3,341 patients (2,040 females and 1,301 males). Tooth agenesis was evaluated for hypodontia and oligodontia -excluding the third molars- from the orthopantomograms. The significance test for the differences in the skeletal morphology between hypodontia and non-hypodontia patients was performed using the Pearson chi-squar…

Incidence and predictive factors for perforation of the maxillary antrum in operations to remove upper wisdom teeth: prospective multicentre study.

2006

Our aim was to evaluate the incidence of perforations of the sinuses and their related treatment after the removal of upper wisdom teeth depending on various anatomical and clinical variables.A total of 1057 upper wisdom teeth were removed under local anaesthetic in the departments of oral surgery at the Universities of Bonn, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Mainz, Germany. Data were collected with the help of an anonymised questionnaire dealing with information about the patients, and the position and stage of the development of teeth, as well as the occurrence and size of an oro-antral communication and its treatment.Of 465 extractions and 592 osteotomies of the upper third molars, 134 intervent…
