Direct Measurement of Mammographic X-Ray Spectra with a Digital CdTe Detection System
2012
In this work we present a detection system, based on a CdTe detector and an innovative digital pulse processing (DPP) system, for high-rate X-ray spectroscopy in mammography (1–30 keV). The DPP system performs a height and shape analysis of the detector pulses, sampled and digitized by a 14-bit, 100 MHz ADC. We show the results of the characterization of the detection system both at low and high photon counting rates by using monoenergetic X-ray sources and a nonclinical X-ray tube. The detection system exhibits excellent performance up to 830 kcps with an energy resolution of 4.5% FWHM at 22.1 keV. Direct measurements of clinical molybdenum X-ray spectra were carried out by using a pinhole…

The Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress (TICS), consisting of 57 items, is an instrument for measuring chronic stress in nine areas. There is also a short form (SSCS) of the TICS consisting of 12 items. However, this 12-item short form does not include all nine areas of the theoretical model and the long version. Therefore, a short version including all nine scales/areas was investigated. The TICS was taken by a sample of N = 2,473 respondents from the general population, aged 14 to 99, selected by random-route sampling. Confirmatory factor analyses applying robust maximum likelihood estimations (MLM) tested the model fit. The one-factor-model proposed by the original authors was tested, and…
Distortion product otoacoustic emissions in healthy newborns: normative data.
1995
Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) offer an alternative to transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) as an audiological test. The former can be used as a screening technique, and may also provide frequency-specific information about the functional state of the cochlea. We recorded DPOAE in a group of healthy newborns to establish the Characteristics of a DPOAE “audiogram” (DP-gram) in this population. The DP-gram can be obtained with characteristics quite similar to those observed in adults, with two sharp peaks of maximum amplitude at F2 frequencies of 2 kHz and 5-6 kHz, and a decline in DPOAE amplitude in mid frequencies. The results confirm the limitations of DPOAE r…
Design, implementation and experimental results of an inductive power transfer system for electric bicycle wireless charging
2020
The use of renewable energy and the transformation of transport mode are crucial items for achieving an efficient and clean electrical mobility that allow being competitive on the market. In this context the interface between the power system and the Electric Vehicles (EVs) assumes a strategic role. Specifically, wireless energy transmission, based on Inductive Power Transfer (IPT), is an attractive solution for EVs charging. Moreover, the use of electric bicycles or kick scooters as mode of urban transport is continuously growing because they are lightweight, sustainable, easily parking, flexible and efficient transport devices. Owing to its benefits, the wireless power transfer can be con…
Optimal matching between optical rectennas and harvester circuits
2017
This paper deals with optimal coupling issues between rectennas and harvesting circuits. An optical rectenna consists of a nanoantenna usually coupled with an ultra-high speed rectifier. These devices aim to receive and convert solar and thermal radiation in a DC voltage, while a harvester circuit provides the energy to be stored. The rectenna impedance is influenced both by its structure and by the rectifying diode, the harvester circuit impedance has to be matched to optimize the power transfer. The purpose of this contribution is to discuss the best impedance conditions by taking into account the constraints that are due to the individual devices the conversion system consist of. Finally…
Advanced Techniques for Powering Wireless Sensor Nodes through Energy Harvesting and Wireless Power Transfer
2020
This paper presents three different techniques for efficiently powering an energy-autonomous wireless sensor (EAWS) through both energy harvesting (EH) and RF wireless power transfer (WPT). The aim of the paper is to provide effective strategies and techniques to reduce, as far as possible, the cost of wiring of the automotive production process due to the continuous and constant increase in the use of sensors. The techniques employ a highly integrated state-of-the-art, ultra-low power 2.5 mu W system-on-chip (SoC) system, designed for multi-source RF wireless energy harvesting and power transfer and are designed with the goal of minimizing and, where possible, eliminating the costly mainte…
Family history of type 2 diabetes and altered maximal aerobic capacity in elite young athletes: a cross-sectional study.
2008
Aim. Family history of type 2 diabetes is a predictive risk factor of illness in sedentary subjects and induces early phenotypic and metabolic alterations. The aim of this study was to determine whether a family history of diabetes in young male athletes had an effect on metabolic functional parameters. Methods. The study population was 42 young male athletes with or without a family history of type 2 diabetes. Anthropometric parameters, body composition, and maximal aerobic capacity (V̇O2max) were assessed. Results. V̇O2max was lower in the 13 athletes with a family history of diabetes (FH+) than in the 29 athletes without a family history of the disorder (FH-) matched for kilogram of body…
Pattern and rate of post-20 ka vertical tectonic motion around the Capo Vaticano Promontory (W Calabria, Italy) based on offshore geomorphological in…
2014
The magnitude and rate of Late Pleistocene-Holocene vertical tectonic movements offshore of the Capo Vaticano Promontory (western Calabria, southern Italy) have been measured on the basis of the present-day depth variations of the edges of submerged depositional terraces (and associated abrasion platforms) that formed below the storm-wave base, during the sea level stillstand of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). These depositional features, represented by submerged prograding wedges and an associated terrace-shaped upper boundary, have been identified in high-resolution seismic reflection profiles acquired along the continental shelf and the upper slope of the promontory, and are referred to …
A multidisciplinary approach to reveal the Sicily Climate and Environment over the last 20 000 years
2010
Abstract We present a thorough review of the knowledge on the climate and environment in Sicily over the last 20 000 years, taking into account results of several studies carried using terrestrial and marine records. We obtain a coherent framework of the most important changes succeeded in the island, even if some points need further investigation. All the reconstructions of surface temperatures of the seas and the air surrounding Sicily point out severe climatic conditions during the last glacial period. The steppe- and semisteppe-like vegetation pattern testifies, together with additional evidence from geochemical data of lacustrine evidence, markedly arid conditions. Fi-nally, significan…
Quaternary Glaciations in the French Alps and Jura
2011
During last glacial maximum, the pre-existing relief of the Alps and the Jura Mountains controlled glacier development. The Jura massive morphology, only slightly dissected by valleys, resulted in a wide ice-sheet; and this situation contrasts with the Alps where numerous deep valleys were filled by big glaciers.
